What is Verification?

Verification is the process by which information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is verified for accuracy. The federal government requires that all colleges and universities confirm the data reported by students and their parents, if applicable, in order to ensure that students receive all the financial aid they are entitled and prevent ineligible students from receiving aid for which they are not entitled.

How will I know if I am selected for verification?

If you are selected for verification by the federal processor, there will be an asterisk next to your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) on your Student Aid Report (SAR). You will also be informed of having been selected for verification in a SAR acknowledgment letter. The University will also inform you through the following:

  1. Requirements for verification will be added to your myUHV Financial Aid To-Do list.
  2. A missing information notification will be sent to your Student Email.

Why was I selected for Verification?

The majority of students are selected at random by the federal processor. A student may also be chosen if the FAFSA information submitted is incomplete or inconsistent. Verification is a federal regulation and is not a form of punishment. It is a process to ensure the accuracy of awarding.

Is verification mandatory?

Verification is a federal regulation and must be completed for a student to be considered for federal aid. Purposely giving false or misleading information regarding eligibility for Federal or State aid may result in fines, jail terms or both.

What do I have to submit for verification?

Please check your myUHV To-Do list in order to view the items you are requested to submit. You may be asked to submit the following:

Dependent Students:

  1. Copy of student's and parent's federal tax return transcript.
  2. Dependent verification worksheet from the Financial Aid Forms page.
  3. Copy of the student’s and parent’s W-2 forms.

Independent Students:

  1. Student’s (and spouse, if applicable) federal tax return transcript.
  2. Independent verification worksheet from the Financial Aid Forms page.
  3. Student’s (and spouse, if applicable) W-2 forms.

When submitting documents (tax return transcripts and W-2s for example), please include your student ID number on each page for identification purposes.

The tax return transcripts must be requested from www.irs.gov. It must be a tax return transcript. We cannot accept an account transcript.  The tax filer can obtain a tax return transcript by submitting a request by mail, phone, paper or online.  To use the Get Transcript Online tool, the user must have (1) access to a valid email address, (2) a text-enabled mobile phone in the user's name, and (3) specific financial account numbers.

Using the IRS Data Retrieval tool on the FAFSA application can help to minimize the risk of being selected for verification.

Additional documentation may be requested by the Office of Financial Aid after the initial review of your submitted documents.

How long does verification take?

Please allow for 4-5 business days to process documentation or 2-3 weeks during peak processing. It may take longer during peak processing. Please check your myUHV account for status updates. Verification items will be marked as “received” once they have been submitted. If an item is marked as “incomplete,” please contact the Financial Aid Office.

What is the deadline to submit verification documents?

August 1, 2023, is the deadline to submit verification documents for the 2022-2023 aid year.  If you are not able to submit documents by the deadline, you will need to secure other arrangements to settle any outstanding debt to the university.
