Supplemental Certification

Our ESL Supplemental Certification program will provide you with specialized skills to work with students in K-12 classrooms for whom English is not their first language by assisting with language development, academic learning, and sociocultural integration.

Before you get started, you’ll need

Your first step is to apply!

Undergraduate students interested in obtaining certification in ESL must have the required courses on their Core Subject EC-6 Certification or the Core Subject 4-8 Certification degree plan. These courses include:

  • ANTH 3311: Anthropology of Diverse Populations*
  • ESLN 4320: Teaching English as a Second Language*
  • ESLN 4310: Language and Reading (ESLN 4320 as its prerequisite)
  • ENGL 3310: Introduction of the Study of Language
  • CUIN 4303: Student Teaching: ESL

*Already on EC-6 or 4-8 degree plans

**CUIN 4303 Student Teaching: ESL will replace ESED 4303 Early School Student Teaching or MSED 4303 Middle School Student Teaching
