Federal Military Tuition Assistance
The Department of Defense (DOD) Federal Tuition Assistance Program (TA) provides financial assistance to service members for education programs. TA is available for courses that are offered in the classroom or by distance learning as long as they are part of an approved academic degree program.
Eligible service members can receive TA at a rate of $250 per semester credit hour with an annual maximum amount of $4500 each fiscal year (October 1 to September 30).
How to use TA at UHV
- Prior to enrolling in classes, service members should consult with their Educational Service Officer (ESO), military counselor, or respective branch of service for approval.
- Once approved, a copy of the voucher(s) will need to be submitted to the Student Billing Office.
DOD Compliance
- Per DoDI 1322.25, Voluntary Education Programs, paragraph 1.c.(1)(b), UHV “will not use unfair, deceptive, and abusive recruiting practices.”
- Per DoD MOU, paragraph 3.j.(2), UHV is required to “Refrain from providing any commission, bonus, or other incentive payment based directly or indirectly on securing enrollments or federal financial aid (including Tuition Assistance funds) to any persons or entities engaged in any student recruiting, admission activities, or making decisions regarding the award of student financial assistance.”
- Per DoD MOU, paragraph 3.j.(3), UHV will “Refrain from high-pressure recruitment tactics such as making multiple unsolicited contacts (3 or more), including contacts by phone, email, or in-person, and engaging in same-day recruitment and registration for the purpose of securing Service member enrollments.” The prohibition of this practice will be formally provided to staff members that regularly work with military students. Student may submit a complaint at www.militaryonesource.mil/voluntary-education/complaint
- Per DoD MOU, paragraph 4.d.(1), “If an eligible Service member decides to use Tuition Assistance (TA), [UHV] will enroll him or her only after the TA is approved by the individual's Service.
- Per DoD MOU, paragraph 3.b and 3.l, institutions are required to “Be accredited by a national or regional accrediting agency recognized by ED… [and] obtain the approval of their accrediting agency for any new course or program offering, provided such approval is required under the substantive change requirements of the accrediting agency… before the enrollment of a Service member into the new course or program offering.” A list of educational programs that prepare a student for an occupational license will be disseminated and housed at https://www.uhv.edu/provost/professional-certifications-licensure-disclosure/. The requirements to achieve these credentials are discussed during advising sessions as a standard practice before students register for classes and confirmed by the students with the completion of a Degree Progress Report.
