Orientation and Transition Programs – Summer 2021

ROAR First-Year Orientation is an opportunity for individuals to begin to express their roar at the University of Houston-Victoria It is for students who will primarily attend classes at the Victoria campus and who will be in their first year of college. It is an event specifically designed for new college students who will attend UHV and want to discover everything our institution has to offer. At ROAR First-Year Orientation, students will learn about campus resources and opportunities, and how to acclimate and rise to success at UHV. All summer 2021 ROAR First-Year Orientation sessions will be held virtually on Microsoft Teams.

There will be multiple ROAR First-Year Orientation sessions. Registration links and dates can be found below:

No. However, it is highly encouraged as it will help first-year students transition smoothly into university life. All students who attend ROAR First-Year Orientation will receive a free T-shirt, face mask and hat mailed to them after attending a session.

No, the ROAR First-Year Orientation is free.

Various resources and information will be shared at ROAR First-Year Orientation. Academic resources such as advising, degree plans, tutoring, writing assistance and the UHV Library will be covered. Additionally, financial aid, campus safety, student billing, campus life, student services, and Jaguar pride and traditions will be discussed with first-year students. Lastly, there will be several panel discussions. One will be a student panel in which you will meet some of our Orientation Leaders, and another panel will be with faculty members focused on academic success.

Yes. However, we do encourage you to register for classes as soon as possible, as classes fill up quickly.

You will work with your advisor in the Student Success Center to register for classes. They will assist you with the process. Using your smart phone, follow the steps below:

  1. Search for “Navigate Student” and download the app.
  2. Search for “Victoria” and select the University of Houston-Victoria.
  3. Sign in with your UHV log in information. This log in is the same as your UHV email and JagSpace.
  4. Once the app opens, click “Appointments” and schedule an advising appointment with your advisor in the Student Success Center.
  5. If you have questions about Navigate, or about meeting with your advisor in the Student Success Center, email sschelp@uhv.edu. You can also visit www.uhv.edu/navigate for more information on Navigate.

We encourage you to register for classes as soon as possible, as classes fill up quickly. Preferably, you will work with your advisor in the Student Success Center to register for classes before attending ROAR First-Year Orientation. However, if that’s not possible, optional advising sessions will be available on each of the ROAR First-Year Orientation dates from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can sign up for these optional sessions using the instructions in the previous question, or by emailing sschelp@uhv.edu.

Yes. It is a requirement for all first-year students to attend Jaguar Journey Welcome Weekend. Jaguar Journey is held in Victoria the weekend before (August 20-22) classes begin for the fall semester and is required for all first-year students as part of their UNIV course.Incomingfirst-year students are automatically registered for Jaguar Journey.

At the ROAR First-Year Festival, we aim to engage with first-year students and their families by connecting them to resources and opportunities intended to help them acclimate to campus and rise to success academically and socially while in school at UHV. This in-person event in Victoria gives students and their families the opportunity to connect with the university and its faculty and staff a few weeks prior to housing move in and the beginning of the fall semester. We hope it will help ease the transition into the Jaguar family.

No, the ROAR First-Year Festival is free.

The ROAR First-Year Festival provides students and their families ample interaction with UHV administrators, university programs, and the Victoria community to build a sense of pride and support for our new first-year students. This event will feature live music and entertainment, campus tours, panel discussions, City of Victoria bus tour, presentations, and a resource fair.

At ROAR Katy Orientation, students will learn about campus resources and opportunities, and how to acclimate and rise to success at the UHV Katy Instructional Site. The ROAR Katy Orientation session will be held virtually on Microsoft Teams.

No, the ROAR Transfer Orientation is free.

Various resources and information will be shared at ROAR Transfer Orientation. Academic resources such as advising, degree plans and tutoring will be covered. Library essentials such as books, electronic resources, media and virtual services also will be provided. Additionally, campus life, student services, security, and Jaguar pride and traditions will be discussed. A wide array of technical support information will be disseminated; this includes discussing the Help Desk, JagSpace, Microsoft Teams and Office 365. Lastly, there will be several panel discussions to engage in. One will be a student panel in which you will meet some of our Orientation Leaders, and another panel will be with faculty members focused on academic success.
