Internal Funding Resources
A variety of faculty development resources are available to the UHV faculty. These resources are available to all faculty, some are available to faculty upon request and availability of funding, and some are competitively awarded. Faculty Development and Research grants are intended to further the university's educational mission by contributing to faculty members' ongoing professional development, the advancement of knowledge in their fields and profession, and the university's visibility and credibility.
School Faculty Development Funds
A maximum of $2,000 is available for faculty development through application to the faculty member's particular School to support activities such as travel to professional conferences for presentations, service as an officer for a professional organization, or small research grant support. Specifically, projects should focus on increasing knowledge in a discipline, improving teaching effectiveness, or applying knowledge in the academic field or teaching profession. Please, see your School's policy or consult with your dean for more information about applying for these funds.
Internal Research Grant Awards
The Research Grant Awards are for tenured and tenure track faculty to support pilot projects that can develop and submit proposals to external agencies for significant grant funding. The program is competitive, with an estimated four awards granted annually. The amount of funding varies from year to year, depending on funding availability.
Application process:
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs disseminates a request of proposals (RFP) to UHV faculty in October annually. Submissions are due February 1. The Faculty Development Leave Committee evaluates the applications according to established criteria and recommends awards to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Awards are announced by April 15 for the following academic year, September 1 through August 31. All research funds must be expended during the fiscal year. Faculty are expected to submit an expanded grant proposal to an appropriate external funding agency within six months of completing a pilot project. Future UHV research grants will be dependent on meeting this requirement for submitting proposals to outside agencies. For more information, see Internal Research Grant Application.
Junior Faculty Summer Research Grant
The grant encourages and supports junior faculty (tenure-track, but not yet tenured) by awarding a limited number of $10,000 salary stipends to eligible faculty to pursue promising research projects for one summer. Junior faculty are not allowed to teach while participating in the summer research grant. The grant is nonrenewable, and faculty members are eligible for only one such award. For more information, see Junior Faculty Summer Research Grant Application.
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs disseminates the request for proposals (RFP), including the application, to UHV faculty in October annually. Submissions are due the second Friday of January. The Faculty Development Leave Committee evaluates the applications according to the established criteria and recommends awards to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Awards are announced by April 15 for the subsequent summer. Recipients are required to submit a brief report (1-2 pages), or a copy of the work completed no later than September 30 of the award year. They will be expected to present their research next academic year at a UHV Discovers event.
Keep in mind UHV research funds cannot be used for software purchases. Software needs shall be requested through each School’s administration and the UHV purchasing department before purchases. Refer to the Faculty Manual for more detail regarding the faculty development and research funds.
