3.5 Appointment
Appointment is defined by the UHS Board of Regents as the employment of an individual in a given capacity for a specified time period at a stated salary. UHV uses the following faculty appointments:
- Tenured/Tenure-track appointments: This includes appointment as assistant, associate and full professors.
- Clinical appointments: Clinical appointments include clinical assistant, associate, and full professors. These are non-tenure track positions, annual appointments, with opportunities for promotion.
- Teaching appointments: Teaching appointments include teaching assistant, associate, and full professors. These are non-tenure track positions, annual appointments, with opportunities for promotion.
- Non-tenure track appointments: Other non-tenure track appointments include visiting faculty, lecturers, modified, and adjunct positions. Individuals are hired for these positions for a specific term, usually an academic year or semester, to teach specific courses.
- In-Residence appointment: A faculty member designated “in residence,” such as “writer-in-residence” or “artist-in-residence,” offers outstanding professionals the opportunity to render a specified service to the institution through lectures, performances, demonstrations, master classes, or other consultations. In-residence faculty must have qualifications that reflect superior proficiency and excellence in their fields, and they must provide the institution with special instructional expertise not otherwise available to students from current faculty Full-time appointments are for one year but may be renewed for up to three years. “In-residence” faculty are not eligible for promotion and tenure, and do not have faculty voting rights. At the end of their contract, a faculty member “in residence” must go through a standard nationwide faculty search as described in the Faculty Manual section 5.6 before they can be appointed to a permanent position at any rank. Whenever possible, the dean of the college should develop a job description in consultation with the faculty. “In-residence” faculty hired prior to the adoption of this policy are exempt from the implementation of this policy.
