Loan and Grant Counseling
Loan Entrance Counseling
Direct Loan Entrance Counseling
First-time Federal Direct Loan borrowers at UHV must complete a Federal Direct Loan Entrance Counseling session prior to the disbursement of student loans. This helps you to understand your responsibilities as a student loan borrower. Log into https://studentaid.gov to begin your session.
Graduate PLUS Loan Entrance Counseling
First-time Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan borrowers at UHV must complete a Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Entrance Counseling session prior to the disbursement of student loans. This helps you to understand your responsibilities as a Grad PLUS loan borrower. Log into https://studentaid.gov to begin your session.
Loan Exit Counseling
Direct Loan Exit Counseling
Each time a Direct Subsidized, Unsubsidized, and/or PLUS student loan borrower withdraws from a semester, drops below half-time, or graduates from a degree program, the student must complete a Direct Exit Counseling session on the web. A university hold will be placed on the student's account if the student is required to complete the counseling session. Students will not be able to register for upcoming semesters or get an academic transcript until confirmation of completion is received in the Office of Financial Aid. A Return of Title IV Funds will be calculated if a student withdraws, which may result in a balance owed to UHV.
If a student does not have access to the web, a computer is available in the Office of Financial Aid.
If you drop below half-time enrollment:
-
The 6-month grace period will begin on Direct Subsidized Loans and/or Direct Unsubsidized loans. If you resume enrollment on at least a half-time basis before the end of the 6-month grace period, your loan will return to "in-school" status and you will be eligible for a full 6-month grace period when you leave school or drop below half-time enrollment again.
-
Repayment on PLUS Loans must begin within 60 days after the final disbursement of the loan occurs for the loan period. There is no grace period unless the borrower contacts the loan servicer to request an in-school disbursement. A parent PLUS borrower may defer repayment while the student is in school. Parents must contact the loan servicer to request the deferment while the student is in school and/or request a six-month deferment after the student is no longer attending school.
TEACH GRANT COUNSELING
TEACH Grant Entrance Counseling
Each student awarded a TEACH Grant will be required to go through TEACH Grant Entrance Counseling before the grant will be disbursed.
A TEACH Grant will be converted to an unsubsidized Direct Loan if the student fails to complete his/her service obligation (teach for four years in a high-need, low-income school within an eight-year period after completion of education).
TEACH Grant Subsequent Counseling
Each student awarded an additional TEACH Grant will be required to go through TEACH Grant Subsequent Counseling before the additional grant award will be disbursed.
TEACH Grant Exit Counseling
Each time a student withdraws from a semester drops below half-time, or graduates from a TEACH-eligible program or graduate, the student must complete a TEACH Grant Exit Counseling session.
