UHV offers wide range of summer camps
The University of Houston-Victoria is opening up summer camps registrations, offering a wide range of enriching programs for students of various ages and interests.
From STEM exploration and coding to sports and athletic showcases, UHV is providing education and engaging experiences for youth in Victoria and the surrounding regions.
STEM Summer Camp
Info: Led by UHV instructors, this program will encompass various disciplines (Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics). Through engaging hands-on activities, as well as captivating demonstrations, participants will have the opportunity to enrich their understanding of these subjects while simultaneously enjoying a dynamic and stimulating learning environment.
Age: For high school students only. Limited to 12 students.
Date: June 17 to 21. No camp on June 19 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.)

“It is a one-of-a-kind summer camp! We will have the opportunity to cover amazing different areas, with amazing instructors,” said Ricardo Teixeira, a UHV associate professor of mathematics. “We go from math to magic tricks, from biology to chemistry, from mechanics to electromagnetism. It will be super fun and super educational.”
High School Robotics Summer Camp
Info: Students will learn basic concepts of digital simulation and robotics in engineering fields with an emphasis on critical thinking and mathematical problem solving. The goal is to increase the number of youth interested in computing and robotics, and to introduce the basic concepts of robotics, simulation and engineering. Students will gain knowledge and experience with programming languages and drastically increase their confidence in computer science. Six students will be allowed to stay In the UHV residence halls and experience life on campus during the weeklong event. The summer camp will fulfil the needs of students who are academically talented and motivated and are searching for summer activities that offer enriched opportunities and challenges. The camp is limited to 12 students. Limited residence hall scholarships are available.

Arduino Summer Camp
Info: This summer camp is a great opportunity for middle school students interested in coding to start writing their own programs and developing problem-solving skills. Students will use Arduino microcontrollers to dive into programming and electrical engineering. They will be able to design electrical circuits and sensors, and program them using the Arduino Integrated Development Environment. Campers also will learn how to write programs to perform multiple projects, including how to build and control a robotic car.
Age: Middle school students
Date: Aug. 5 to 9.

The Texas Women in Computing Summer Camp
Info: The Texas Women in Computing Summer Camp is for middle school and will introduce students to advanced and interesting computer science concepts.
Students will benefit from an increased interest and participation in computing, advanced knowledge in computer science concepts, a foundation of computational thinking skills, and other skills that will increase future career opportunities. The computer programming summer camp will provide students with challenges and growth opportunities designed to motivate them to excel in the computer science fields and pursue careers in science, technology. engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

Virtual Data Science Summer Bootcamp
Info: This summer camp will feature demonstrations using mathematics and data, and data science activities using machine learning with MakeCode and with JavaScript will also be included. Participants will work on a project and present the project at the end of the camp. The one with the best project will be awarded a prize.

University of Houston-Victoria Soccer Camp
Info: UHV Soccer camp is specifically designed to meet the demands of player development in a positive, creative and fun learning environment. Campers will be instructed on proper technique in passing, receiving, dribbling and shooting as well as providing them with age-appropriate tactical knowledge using small, sided games. Campers are grouped based on age, playing ability and experience. UHV Soccer camp is open to all abilities and experience.
Age: 4-17 (Boys and Girls)
Dates: Week 1: June 3-7, Week 2: July 15-19. Morning Session 9 a.m. to noon. Evening Session 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Cost: $185 per session, or $240 for both sessions.

UHV Kids Baseball Summer Camp
Info: Campers will go through a number of drills of different skills focused on the fundamentals of the game. They will also receive a camp T-shirt. Each camper should bring their glove, bat, helmet, sunscreen and water. 8:30 a.m. to noon at Riverside Park.
Age: 4-13.
Date: June 10 to 13, June 22 to 25

“Getting to help out the youth in and around the Victoria area is something that we as a program take pride in. We will be teaching the fundamentals while showing different drills to help in all aspects of the game. There was a great turnout last year and we are hoping to see more this year,” said Jonathan Stavinoha, UHV head baseball coach.

“The showcases give us a chance to see the next generation of prospective college athletes. We have picked players from each of our past showcases and look forward to seeing the talent that can help represent Victoria for years to come,” Stavinoha said.
