Registration open for math and robotics event

The University of Houston-Victoria has opened registration for its annual Math & Robotics Awareness Day event, which will be held on April 29.

UHV Math & Robotics Awareness Day is a free event that brings high school students to campus to participate in mathematics and computer science competitions; observe presentations and demonstrations of science, technology, engineering and mathematics principles; and interact with area industrial leaders in STEM fields. The event is funded by a grant from Alcoa Foundation.

“Math & Robotics Awareness Day is a great opportunity for area students to learn about STEM fields and showcase their own mathematics and computer science knowledge,” said Dmitri Sobolev, interim dean of the UHV College of Natural & Applied Science. “We are grateful to Alcoa Foundation for their support and for continuing to make this excellent event possible.”

The event is open for about 200 high school students. To register, teachers can go to https://www.uhv.edu/stem-events/math-robotics-events/ and click the registration link. Registration is open from Feb. 24 to April 22.

“Math & Robotics Awareness Day is one of my favorite events of the year,” said Ricardo Teixeira, UHV associate professor of mathematics. “I enjoy seeing the students come together and have so much joy in learning about STEM subjects and seeing new ideas. Some students love it so much, they come all four years they are in high school.”

As part of the event, students in each grade will take a mathematics test. In addition, those who wish to test their computer science knowledge can take a computer science test. The top three scores in each grade level of the mathematics tests and the top three in the computer science test will receive awards at the end of the day. In previous years, the prizes for the first-place winners have included tablets such as iPads. The second- and third-place winners in each category will receive medals or trophies.

In addition to the test, students will attend demonstrations and presentations by UHV faculty members. They also will be able to interact with representatives from area companies and industries through expo booths between demonstrations. A free lunch and snacks will be provided by the university.
