Helenavi Sumilong, Student Government Association president, left, and SGA vice president Alex Velazquez, work alongside university staff and guests during the Jaguar Paw Prints event on Aug. 26 at the University of Houston-Victoria. The purpose of the event was to get the campus community together as it gets ready to start the academic year and to reinforce the message that the university mascot, jaX the Jaguar, is here to stay even after the transition to Texas A&M University-Victoria happens. On a muggy Tuesday morning, university staff, students and the community gathered at the university's U Parking Lot to spray paint red paw prints all around the driveway. Guests who came to the event included representatives from the offices of Texas Rep. A.J. Louderback and Texas Sen. Lois Kolkhorst. The next big community event will be Jag Fest, scheduled for Sept. 4 from 6-9 p.m. at DeLeon Plaza in downtown Victoria. The community is encouraged to attend to celebrate the transition from UHV to A&M-Victoria. Live music, food, vendors and swag will be at the event.
