Inside the Center for Student Success at the University of Houston-Victoria, one figure stands amidst the flurry of activity.

Hanna Hattermann, a psychology sophomore and lead writing consultant, not only oversees a team of dedicated consultants, but also serves as a beacon of support and guidance for her fellow students.

“I really love what I do,” Hattermann said. “I handle all the writing submissions, all the paper reviews and everything in between.”

She has been working at the Center for Student Success since last spring. As the lead writing consultant, she oversees all of the paperwork coming in, including the number of paper submissions coming in, and analyzes the details of each writing session.

“I enjoy seeing other perspectives and trying to help people because they come in and have no idea how to start something, and that’s when I guide them through the process,” Hattermann said.

The majority of writing sessions are done online, but students can make appointments for a writing consulting session in person as well, Hattermann said.

“Hanna is a valuable asset at the Center for Student Success. She is a great leader in her role as Lead Writing Consultant and does her job very well,” said Heather Crow, the center’s operations coordinator. “She is compassionate and patient with the students she assists and gives them helpful advice on their papers. We love having Hanna in the center and can’t imagine it running the same without her. Hanna is amazing!”

Originally from Weimar, Hattermann first came to UHV in the fall of 2022 because of its proximity to her family and friends. Some of her most memorable moments since being on campus are all of the friends she has made since working at the Center for Student Success, she said.

“I toured and just fell in love with the campus,” Hattermann said. “It felt like this was a good fit for me. I can email a professor and they’d get back to me within a couple of hours; I really like the closeness of the community.”

Hattermann said her love for writing and helping others has always been intertwined. At a young age, Hattermann said she found solace in expressing herself through words, a habit she built that grew into a deep-rooted love for the craft. In the past, Hattermann said she would dabble in storytelling writing, but is putting it on hold due to her busy schedule, she said.

“For me, if there’s a really stressful situation, I would write it out and list all the things I could do and start piecing a solution together,” Hattermann said. “It helps me fully understand what I’m getting myself into.”

Despite her busy schedule, Hatterman said she remains steadfast in her desire to further her academic and professional growth. She is pursuing her Bachelor of Arts in psychology and expects to graduate in spring 2026.

When she first started her college career, Hattermann said she wasn’t too sure what route she wanted to take. After taking an introductory psychology course, she grew to like it and dove into it when it finally clicked that this was the major she was going to pursue and make into a career one day.

“Eventually, I want to go into the field of behavior analysis,” Hattermann said. “I want to become a registered behavior therapist someday.”

After she receives her bachelor’s degree, Hattermann said she plans to take the board-certified test and become a certified behavior analyst. She plans to create and implement programs in the future to help young children, especially those with autism and others who are experiencing behavioral issues.

“That’s something that stood out to me when I was looking at the possibilities; something just clicked for me,” Hattermann said. “It felt like my calling.”
