UHV offers Take 5 program for qualifying students
As students sign up for classes in the upcoming fall semester, the University of Houston-Victoria has created a new program to help undergraduate students take an additional class during the semester.
The Take 5 program allows undergraduate students who are paying in-state tuition to take an additional fifth class for free if they sign up for four classes during the fall semester. The program is meant to help students by making tuition more affordable while helping them take enough courses to graduate in four years instead of stretching their time in college out to five, six or even seven years, said Karla DeCuir, UHV interim vice president for enrollment management.
“One of the challenges we see in students is a need to limit how many courses they take at once in order to pay tuition costs as they go through each semester,” DeCuir said. “However, studies have shown that students who are able to take a full course load each semester are more likely to complete their degrees. We want to encourage our students to take that extra course and successfully complete their studies.”
To be eligible for the program, students must be enrolled in 15 semester credit hours and have a balance due for tuition that is not covered by military, state, federal or any other benefit, scholarship or grant. Eligible students also must be Texas residents who are pursuing an undergraduate degree at UHV.
The program is only planned for the fall semester, but if there is a continuing need, UHV will consider expanding the program for future semesters.
“UHV is proud to serve students who are often nontraditional or from underserved populations, and this program will allow us to offer those students more opportunities to take additional courses and finish their degrees in less time,” UHV President Bob Glenn said. “I hope this will serve as motivation and encouragement so more of our students can keep pushing and reach their academic and career goals in the future.”
