UHV invites community to embark on celestial exploration during Universe Night

The University of Houston-Victoria is inviting astronomers, star-chasers and the community to explore the universe at Universe Night on March 19.

Hosted by the UHV College of Natural & Applied Science, the evening event will be filled with educational insights from different speakers, a public telescope viewing and cookies.

Starting at 7:30 p.m., attendees are invited to socialize and mingle over cookies in the lobby of UHV University South, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St.

At 8 p.m., UHV Provost Chance Glenn will take the stage with his talk, “Extending Humanity’s Reach Toward the Stars.” He will talk about the challenges that come with venturing into the far reaches beyond Earth, and the potential benefits for humanity once a method of interstellar travel is established.

“The universe is a big place,” Glenn said. “Even though we may feel small sometimes, our ability to look out there and understand it and to wonder about it gives us great power, and it allows us to connect together as human beings.”

At 8:30 p.m., guest speaker Ashraf Abu Sarah will be presenting, “Backyard astrophotography,” in which he will discuss his experience in doing backyard astrophotography and will give a demonstration on how to capture photos of stars, planets and celestial objects.

To conclude the night at 9 p.m., weather permitting, guests are invited to partake in a public telescope viewing at UHV University Commons, 3006 N. Ben Wilson St. The opportunity is made possible through collaboration with the Crossroads Astronomy Club.
