Students, families invited to explore campus during Jaguar Day
The University of Houston-Victoria is inviting prospective students and their families to Jaguar Day, an open house event offering a glimpse into UHV’s academic community, this coming March.
Jaguar Day includes a campus tour that offers students a view of the residence halls, as well as dining and study areas. Prospective students also have the chance to speak with faculty and staff to learn more about majors and degree programs, said Oscar Torres, UHV associate director of enrollment management and new student experience.
“They will be able to get connected with various resources on campus, but overall, Jaguar Day aims to paint a better picture of how UHV can meet their educational needs,” Torres said.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will have different stations posted across the campus.
Check-in will commence at 9 a.m. at UHV University Commons, with coffee and doughnuts for guests to enjoy, Torres said.
At 10 a.m., UHV President Bob Glenn will kick the day off and deliver a welcome message to attendees in the lobby area. An agenda will be given to students once they check in, Torres said. Right before kickoff, a spirit rally will be put on by members of the spirit team, he said.
Additionally, parents and students will receive a free T-shirt and lunch buffet when they attend Jaguar Day, Torres said. Jaguar Hall Dining will open its door at 10:30 a.m. and is located inside Jaguar Hall at 2705 Houston Highway.
Admissions and financial aid assistance workshops will be on campus that Saturday to assist prospective students with any questions about documents, financial aid and the process to apply to UHV, Torres said. There also will be a student organization fair that will show prospective students some of the ways they can be involved on campus, and how to create their own organization at UHV.
“I am thrilled to be able to welcome potential Jaguars and their families on campus,” Torres said. “It allows us to really speak with them, find out what they’re interested in, and showcase the growth that’s happening at UHV.”
UHV’s Makayla Ramirez said she is thrilled to see new faces on campus on Jaguar Day. Ramirez, who is going into her junior year, is also working as a student ambassador, a position she has held since last September. As a student ambassador, she is tasked with giving tours to prospective students and answering any questions they might have along the way.
This Jaguar Day, she will be assisting with the tours, as well as connecting the students with campus resources such as financial aid and the Student Success Center, as well as showing them where classrooms are located, a problem she first encountered when she was a freshman, Ramirez said.
“I am really excited for the upcoming freshman class coming in and all the events we have planned for Jaguar Day,” Ramirez said. “I’m also excited about the transfer and international students visiting the university, and I hope they see UHV as their next home.”
