UHV students, faculty volunteer for marine cleanup

University of Houston-Victoria students and members of the Earthwise Collective student organization Emma Matak, president, left; Amaanee Ismail, treasurer, back; Miranda Kishlock, historian and public relations, center; and Lafayette Dominic Penny, member, ride in a boat Saturday during a San Antonio Bay Partnership cleanup of marine debris in the Port O’Connor area. The students went out in a boat owned by Capt. Jeff Larson, and UHV faculty members Dmitri Sobolev, Aleksandr Pikalov and Teresa LeSage-Clements went out in Sobolev’s boat. The teams filled their boats with trash collected from the waterways. Afterward, the San Antonio Bay Partnership provided lunch at Hurricane Junction. Sobolev and LeSage-Clements are faculty advisors for the student organization.

The University of Houston-Victoria, located in the heart of the Coastal Bend region since 1973 in Victoria, Texas, offers courses leading to more than 50 academic programs in the schools of Arts & Sciences; Business Administration; and Education, Health Professions & Human Development. UHV provides face-to-face classes at its Victoria campus, as well as an instructional site in Katy, Texas, and online classes that students can take from anywhere. UHV supports the American Association of State Colleges and Universities Opportunities for All initiative to increase awareness about state colleges and universities and the important role they have in providing a high-quality and accessible education to an increasingly diverse student population, as well as contributing to regional and state economic development.
