Middle schoolers learn robotics at summer camp

Students attending the UHV Texas Women in Computing summer camp for middle schoolers on Wednesday watch as Nadia Chu, far left, 13, drives a robot designed to pull a heavy stack of boxes. Pictured from left are Nadia, an eighth-grader at Travis in Port Lavaca; Beth Boone, a 13-year-old eighth-grader at Travis Middle School; Joshua Santellana, an 11-year-old sixth-grader at Travis; Michael Velez, an 11-year-old sixth-grader at Cade Middle School in Victoria; Rauan Toriyev, a UHV senior computer science major; and Chris Zuniga, a UHV junior computer science major. During the camp, students learned about building and programming robots, including how gear ratios work, how to adjust the speed and power of a robot, using optical and distance sensors, and building claw and lifting arms. The camp is funded by a grant from Alcoa Foundation.
