University of Houston-Victoria head softball coach Lindsey Ortiz was recently recognized by the Victoria Business and Education Coalition for her years as a mentor at Hopkins Elementary School.

Ortiz has served as a mentor in the Victoria Independent School District for the past 11 years, beginning when she was a student-athlete for the first UHV softball team in 2007.

“She has made the difference in over 150 students’ lives either directly or indirectly over the past 10 years,” said Mentor Lab Manager Felicia Sledge, on recognizing Ortiz’s work. “If it wouldn’t be for her, we would have half the people we have helping us right now.”

After her two seasons as a player for the Jaguars, she continue with the mentoring program while serving as the assistant coach for the Jaguars and working with other UHV student-athletes to become involved in the program. Even after becoming UHV’s head coach in 2014, she continues with the program and every player on the team is involved as well on a weekly basis.

“All we have to do is ask her and she gets it done for us,” said Sledge.

“I am very proud of the work Lindsey and the entire softball team does to help keep kids in school and on the right path, it speaks volumes for our program,” said UHV Athletics Director Ashley Walyuchow.
