“I have a lot of family who graduated from UHV,” said Hermes, who recently graduated from Hallettsville High School. “They said I’d like the small classes, and, of course, it’s close to home.”

Hermes attended UHV’s first-ever freshman orientation on June 23 with her cousin, Stephanie Hermes, who also lives in Hallettsville and will attend the university in the fall. In addition, Amber has another cousin who attends UHV and an aunt and cousin who previously graduated from the university.

Amber, who wants to major in education, said she learned more about the university during orientation.

“It’s been interesting,” she said. “I’ve been excited to meet new people and register for my classes.”

At Hallettsville High School, Amber played on the volleyball and softball teams her freshmen and sophomore years. She also was involved with the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. She was treasurer of her senior class.
