RISE Diversity Conference

The Department of Student Life hosts an annual RISE Diversity Conference. This day-long conference allows students to learn new skills, make new connections, and assists them in creating supportive and affirming spaces for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ individuals to thrive. The conference provides engaging workshops and programs aimed at increasing students’ knowledge and understanding of their own culture and the culture of others. Improvement in these areas enhance students’ ability to effectively engage and work with diverse populations.

This year's conference will be on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in the University North building. Our keynote speaker is UHV's own Karla DeCuir, Assistant Provost for Distance Learning. In her keynote, "Identity: It's Not You, It's Me", DeCuir will discuss the evolution of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and how it has helped us gain a better understanding about how we can create more opportunities for all. While many metrics are set to enhance diversity and people are becoming more aware of being inclusive, the outcomes are simply not equitable. Someone's identity should not be a factor in determining their outcomes and the answer may be within us. Let's continue the journey of DEI and grow together.

The conference is also available to local area high school seniors, Victoria College students, and UH System students. Attendance is free and participants receive a free lunch and conference t-shirt. To register for the conference, please use the links below. Registration will close on Thurs., Oct. 20 at 5 p.m.
