What is the UHV SBDC
SBDC services consist of basic services for small business: Training, Consulting and Technical Assistance.
Training is open to anyone. Topics are relevant to businesses and speakers are chosen on the basis of the benefit they can provide to businesses. Consulting is free and confidential. If you are not currently in business, you will be asked to attend a free two-hour seminar which is an overview of business start-up, and the role UHV SBDC can play in assisting you. After you attend a "Business Basics" seminar, you will meet with a Certified Business Advisor to discuss the next steps to take if you choose to do so. At this point, you become a client of the UHV SBDC.

What is considered a “Small Business”?
By standards of the U.S. Small Business Administration, a business is classified as "small" if it employs less than 500 people. *Please note that there may be different requirements depending on type of industry.
Who can use the services of the SBDC? Do I have to be a UHV Student?
The services of the SBDC are open to anyone who currently owns a business or is interested in starting a business.
Do I have to make an appointment to visit the SBDC?
Yes, appointments are required in order to ensure an advisor is able to assist at a convenient time for you. Just call our office at 361-485-4485.
Is there an easy way to request business counseling or sign up for training?
Take the hassle out of requesting initial business counseling services or training event registration. Register online at UHV SBDC eCenter http://utsa.ecenterdirect.com/ On requesting service or registering for training, you will be assigned an eCenter ID (your e-mail) and password. eCenter access gives you access to see our current training events and easily register for those you want to attend.

How much time should I allow for my appointment with an advisor?
Please allow two hours for your initial visit with your advisor.
How often can I meet with my counselor?
There is no limit to the number of times that a counselor can meet with a client provided that the meetings produce results for the client.
Can I bring a friend or family member to the session?
Please bring those whom you feel are important in developing your business and for the purpose of the advising session. In most cases, spouses are integrally involved in business operations and decisions. Young children can be distracting to you and the counselor if they attend the advising session.
What do I bring with me to the initial counseling session?
You are not required to bring anything to the initial session with one of our business advisors. Just bring your thoughts, questions and passion for what you want to do. We can provide guidance from there.
Remember our business counselors have the previous business ownership, business management and business education to help you. It is free and painless!
What if I don't live in Victoria, can I still use the services?
Our office provides services to the following counties: Aransas, Bee, Calhoun, De Witt, Goliad, Gonzales, Jackson, Karnes, Lavaca, Refugio, Victoria. If you live outside of this area, we can refer you to the SBDC office that handles your location.
Services (counseling, training and technical assistance) are provided throughout the eleven county region by Certified Business Advisors. Counseling is done here at the Victoria office, in numerous satellite offices and in the field. Our counselors are free to meet with you at your place of business. The SBDC counselors work hard to make SBDC services as convenient as possible for our time-strapped business owners, and travel to many of the counties surrounding the Victoria area on a regular schedule.
How much does it cost?
Business counseling services and technical assistance are at no-cost and confidential. Training workshops, special events, and sponsored webinars may include a nominal fee to cover the speaker fees, workbooks, handouts, and other materials.
How does the SBDC offer its’ services for free?
We are federally and state funded. We are a partnership of the U.S. Small Business Administration; and our local host institution is the University of Houston-Victoria. Our regional office is at the Institute of Economic Development at UTSA-a great resource for us. Because of our funding, we cannot pay to advertise our services. So if you attend training or receive consulting and believe it to be valuable-please, tell a friend!
Do you all have free grants or loans for women, minorities...etc?
No, unfortunately we do not have any grants available, and we are not a lending agency. We do provide assistance in loan packaging, and our counselors are here to help you find sources of capital for your business.
Can I do business with the government?
Yes, any business can sell goods and services to the federal, state, and various local governments. However, some preference is given to women, veteran and minority owned businesses. The SBDC can assist with various certifications that will help you and your business as you pursue government business. The SBDC also conducts “Doing Business with the Government” seminars during the year.
Will you write my business plan?
The SBDC assists with developing a business plan for your business or potential business. Our goal is to give you the knowledge, tools and ongoing guidance so you can develop your plan. The true value of a business plan besides it being required for a loan proposal is what you learn about your business and industry during the process.
