Black History Month

In February 2018, the University of Houston-Victoria will observe National Black History Month with on-campus exhibits and special community events. Along with Victoria College and the Victoria Black History Committee, Inc., UHV annually co-sponsors a poster contest for area fifth-grade students and a Black History Month Reception.

Fifth-Grade Poster Contest 

Posters made by more than a hundred Victoria fifth-graders will be available for viewing during the month of February in the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson Street.

Black History Month Reception

UHV, VC and the Victoria Black History Committee, Inc. host an annual reception honoring poster contest participants on the second Friday of every month.  The winners of the contest receive scholarships and camp waivers. Winners, as well as honorable mentions, also receive goody bags from UHV and VC.

The 2017 winners were: Austin Valentine of DeLeon Elementary School, first place, receiving a $2,000 scholarship to UHV and a summer camp waiver from VC, Kooper Wilkerson of Vickers Elementary School, second place, receiving a $1,000 UHV scholarship and a VC summer camp waiver, and Gage Goldman of DeLeon Elementary School, third place, who received a $500 UHV scholarship and a VC summer camp waiver. Honorable Mention awards were given to Arthur Avila of Vickers Elementary, Haley Beckner of Vickers Elementary, Amelia Cavazos of Smith Elementary and Daysha Lugaro of Dudley Elementary.
