The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is central to the teaching, research, and service interests of the greater UHV community, a dynamic destination university in the Coastal Bend region of Texas. We prepare students with the skills and intellectual leadership needed in the public and private sector. Special emphasis is placed on providing students with the critical thinking and technological skills necessary for lifelong success, active citizenship, and global awareness.

Mission

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is central to the teaching, research and service interests of UHV, a dynamic destination university in the Coastal Bend region of Texas. Through the creation, dissemination and application of knowledge, our faculty prepares students to impart knowledge, skills and intellectual leadership in the public and private sector. Special emphasis is placed on providing students with the critical thinking and technological skills necessary for lifelong success, active citizenship, and global awareness.

In furtherance of its mission, the School of Arts and Sciences is committed to the following goals to serve our primary constituents:

Students:

  • Emphasize appropriate values, conceptual knowledge, global and multi-cultural understanding, and analytical, technical, and communication skills
  • Provide meaningful student-professor academic interactions
  • Offer timely, practical and relevant advising
  • Offer opportunities for experiential learning, such as internships, practica, laboratories

Community:

  • Ensure educational opportunities are available and accessible through on-campus, distance learning, off-campus sites and flexible scheduling
  • Provide the community with knowledgeable and skilled leadership from our graduates
  • Participate in service projects that enhance the Coastal Bend and surrounding regions

Faculty:

  • Hire and retain highly qualified faculty
  • Provide opportunities and recognition for pursuit of research interests integrated with education
  • Provide meaningful professional development opportunities

University:

  • Assess and revise our programs to ensure highest quality educational experience
  • Implement and develop the Core Curriculum to distinguish UHV as a destination university
  • Contribute to and participate in efforts to enhance UHV's mission and goals
