International Programs

Jaguar Language Center

At the Jaguar Language Center (JLC), we prepare students to have a foreign language ability that enhances their academic programs and enables them to live, work, study, and research in the US. Jaguar Language Center specializes in English as a Second Language program to international students and others whose native language is not English. Eventually the Jaguar Language Center hopes to introduce additional languages from around the globe.

English as a Second Language Program

Jaguar Language Center offers an English as a Second Language (ESL) program on the campus of the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV), located in the beautiful city of Victoria, TX. Designed to ensure success, students develop the language skills they need in order to succeed on campus and within the community. The ESL program admits students regardless of their current English language ability, whether beginner, intermediate, or advanced. While in the program, students are fully integrated into the academic, social, and cultural life of the University.

Services offered to ESL program International Students

  • Immigration advise and visa issuance assistance to all participants
  • Health Insurance
  • Comprehensive orientation
  • Airport pick-up and drop-off
  • Room and board in a dormitory or residence hall on-campus
  • Graduation and reception for award ceremony
  • Cultural programs to showcase the Texas American culture

Students have three options based on their ESL needs:

  • English Only
  • Jaguar Language Center Conditional Admission Studies
  • Customized Groups

English-Only Option:

Students may choose this intensive, on-campus program if they want to develop their English skills and experience student life on a university campus. This option does not allow for university admissions unless the student applies to the university with all other required application requirements (see next section), which can be completed after the student enrolls in the English only option.

This option is for:

  • People who want to improve their English for better job opportunities in the world
  • Students who want a semester abroad experience in the U.S.
  • Friends and family of UHV students, faculty and staff who want to improve their English and make friends in the Victoria/Houston/Katy community
  • Students who want the option of an English program or a part-time program
  • People who want to improve their English communication skills for other purposes

JLC Conditional Admission Studies:

This option provides an entry pathway for international students who don’t have sufficient TOEFL or IELTS scores to meet the English Language Requirement for admissions purposes before beginning their desired degree program at UHV. Students may not begin academic studies until they have met the passing requirements for the ESL program. Conditional admission students receive an I-20 for language training and a letter of admission to the university for their visa interview. Upon completion of the ESL program, a transfer I-20 for entry in to the degree program will be issued by the university.

This option is for:

  • Students who are preparing for an undergraduate and graduate degree at UHV.

ESL Start Terms (8-15 weeks)
Spring Semester: January to May
Summer Semester: June to August (closed for Summer 2018)
Fall semester: August to December

Customized Programs for groups

UHV offers short-term customized programs designed specifically for groups that combine superior English as a Second Language (ESL) is language training with unique cultural experiences built into the program, giving each participant opportunities to advance their knowledge and communication skills through interaction with local community members. Customized programs start as low as $2600 (+ airline cost) per person. The costs vary depending on the length of the course, the number of course hours, and number of students and services. We recommend groups of 10 or more to reduce the cost for each participant.

We can create an English language and cultural immersion program specifically for the needs of your group. All programs combine intensive coursework in English as a Second Language as well as practical applications through cultural excursions in Texas. This program covers a variety of topics including English language, American Culture, academic skills, and more, depending on the needs of the participants. Dates are flexible and programs range in length from two weeks to a full semester.
