How can I tell when the network is down?

The network usually isn’t “down”. If you suspect an error, first open up your web browser and try to connect to www.uhv.edu. If can see the website, the UHV infrastructure is internally correct and working. If uhv.edu does not load, then try someplace outside uhv.edu like www.google.com. If you can access this page also, then both connections are working.

Usually when the network is performing slowly, changes are being made. Try accessing the pages again and if errors still occur contact the Help Desk.

What inspires someone to get a job at Technology Services?

Information technology provides a stable and fun work environment that appeals to a wide range of people.

What is a domain name and what is our domain name?

Our domain name is UHV.

Technically, a domain name (Web address) is an addressing construct used for identifying and locating computers on the Internet. While computers use Internet Protocol (IP) numbers to locate each other on the Internet, people find them hard to remember. Therefore, domain names (Web addresses) were developed to permit the use of easily remembered words and phrases to identify Internet addresses. For example, the domain name (Web address) uhv.edu represents the UHV Web site. When you type uhv.edu into a Web browser or send e-mail to someone at uhv.edu, the Domain Name System (DNS) translates uhv.edu into the IP numbers used by the Internet and connects you to UHV.

What is spyware and why is it dangerous?

There is an abundance of software programs available for download that are "free". The trouble with these downloads is that they also load software that gathers information from your computer. This software is called "spyware" and it poses a threat to security.

The most threatening of them are "keystroke loggers", which are used to track what you type on your keyboard. User ID's and passwords can be easily intercepted, making encryption and password-protected areas of Web sites useless. But besides leaving you prone to having your most guarded information intercepted, spyware eats memory and bandwidth, which causes your system to slow down and crash more often. AND -- this is a big one -- spyware is not picked up by most anti-virus software.

How does spyware get into your computer?

Just as cookies are planted behind-the-scenes by the Web sites you visit, software you install, and Internet sites you browse leave behind spyware. In fact, some popular music sharing services -- including Kazaa -- have recently caused a stir because it was discovered they were planting spyware. But don't worry. You can protect yourself and your system.

There are programs such as Ad-Aware by Lavasoft.com that will look over your hard drive and remove spyware.

Click on this link and download Ad-Aware Free if you think you have downloaded programs that have spyware.

Another good spyware removal software is Spybot Search & Destroy from safer-networking.org.

If you are not comfortable with downloading, please call the Helpdesk at 361-570-4399 and we will provide assistance. Off campus UHV computer users will need to bring your computer in to the UHV campus.

What is the Password Criteria when changing my password?

Your password needs to be at least 8 characters long containing letters, numbers, and a special character (!@#$%^&* etc.). It cannot contain part of your name or be something that you've used previously.

Also, your password must be changed every 365 days.

What should I do if my computer freezes up? …is sluggish?…responds erratically?

Most of the time this is happening because of a lack of available computer resources, such as RAM (Random Access Memory). Occasionally, programs will gobble up RAM when they are opened and will not give the resources back to the operating system (Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 etc.) when the program is closed.

First, try closing all applications that you can do without. If that does not solve it, restarting the computer will give back the resources.

If the start button is still responding, Select Start/Shut Down, then Restart. If the start button is not responding you will have to push the Ctrl, Alt & Del keys at one time. Then select restart.

If all else fails, push and hold the power button for a slow 10 second count. You will see the computer power down. You will then have to push the power button again to turn the computer back on. You will lose any unsaved changes to any open documents or files.

What software programs are installed on my computer?

Technology Services installs and supports a standard set of software programs. The Supported Software Guide is listed on the intranet under Technology Services, Software, Supported Software.

Whenever I make a phone call to a certain place I hear static, is my phone broken?

No, usually this occurs when there is water in the lines or from calling a remote area. Sometimes a bigger city’s phone line could be down and rerouted causing static. Static in phone connections is handled by of Southwestern Bell or AT&T.

Where can I find information about WiFi access?

For information regarding Wi-Fi access to the UHV network, visit https://www.uhv.edu/information-technology/wifi/

Why do I get an error/not authorized page when searching for a class?

"Error/not authorized" generally means that access was declined because your credentials could not be authenticated.

Please contact the help desk as they can check your user account status, and they can also notify Web Services if the problem is determined to be a problem with a web page.

Why won't my printer print?

The common cause of this problem is backed up printer jobs. Try deleting the backed up jobs by going to settings from the START menu and clicking on “ printers”. Choose the printer you’re having problems with a try deleting the backed up jobs by right clicking on the document and choosing delete.
