The US Census 2016 American Community Survey’s one-year estimate provides some concerning information about college completion. Nationally, 39.6% of adults age 25 or older have earned an associate degree or higher, with degree attainment at 36% in Texas. In Victoria, only 26.1% have completed a two-year or higher degree. Our enrollment is growing, but our students face an unprecedented need for scholarship support, as we serve a student population overwhelmingly comprised of economically disadvantaged individuals. Our strategic plan calls for substantial enrollment growth, the addition of new programs and significant expansion of our athletic programs, all of which depend, either directly or indirectly, on philanthropic support from alumni, friends, corporations and foundations who find our mission worthy of financial investment.
Nationally, about 42 percent of adults age 25 or older have earned an associate degree or higher. Degree attainment is only about 30 percent for Texas. In the Victoria area, only about one in five adults have completed a college certificate or degree within six years of high school graduation. There is no doubt that a college education expands opportunities and opens paths to a richer, more fulfilling life, and far too few people in the areas served by UHV are getting the college degrees that will change their lives for generations. By expanding our infrastructure, our programs and the support we offer students, this campaign intends to do something about that.
