Financial Aid

Pell Grant

The Pell Grant program is the largest of the federal student aid grant programs and provides a "foundation" of financial aid to which assistance from other federal and non-federal sources may be added.

The Federal Pell Grant is available to students who have never received a baccalaureate degree and meet the general eligibility requirements.

The awards are based on the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) assigned by the federal government need analysis method, cost of education and the number of hours the student enrolls. The maximum grant may not exceed $6,495 for the 2021-2022 award year and $6,895 for the 2022-2023 award year. To be eligible to receive a Pell Grant, the student's EFC has be less than $5,846 for 2021-22 award year and $6,206 for the 2022-23 award year. Some less than half-time students may qualify for Pell Grants.

Year-round Pell Grant awards were implemented during the Summer 2020 semester.  If a student received the maximum Pell Grant award during the fall and spring semesters, an additional semester of Pell Grant funding may be offered, not to exceed 150% of the original award.  Students must be enrolled at least half-time to receive the award in the summer.

A student is eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant for a maximum of 12 semesters (full-time) per semester. Once a student reaches 600% of his/her Pell Lifetime Eligibility Used, he/she will not be eligible to receive future Federal Pell Grants.

If a student chooses to return all or a portion of a Federal Pell Grant award, the student must deliver to the school a signed, written statement clearly indicating that the student is returning Pell Grant funds for which he or she is otherwise eligible and that the student understands that those funds may not be available once the award year is over. The student must return the funds directly to the school. A student may not return any Pell Grant funds from a prior year that the student was otherwise eligible to receive.

If a Pell Grant-eligible student will not have his/her Pell Grant funding by the seventh day of classes, UHV offers a Book Loan students can use to assist them in paying for books and supplies.  For more information about Book Loan contact Student Billing

In 2020-21, 49% of the undergraduates received a Pell Grant. Of the 1,797 Pell Grant recipients, 3,832 students were enrolled full-time.
