COVID-19 Emergency Funding (CARES Act)
If you are a University of Houston-Victoria student with expenses related to the disruption of university operations because COVID-19, you may qualify for a federal CARES Act grant. This grant provides emergency funding for college students.
- Only students who are or could be eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, may receive emergency financial aid grants. If a student filed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid and meets the federal eligibility requirements, the student has demonstrated eligibility to participate in programs under Section 484 of the HEA. Students who have not filed a FAFSA but who are eligible to file one also may receive emergency financial aid grants.
- Applicants must provide an explanation of expenses related to the disruption of UHV operations because of COVID-19.
- Students enrolled in classes that were delivered entirely online are not eligible.
- Students must be currently enrolled for the spring 2020 semester at UHV.
- Students must be U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens. UHV undocumented students and international students are not eligible.
- Students must have a high school diploma, a GED or completed high school in an approved homeschool setting. UHV dual credit students are not eligible.
- Students must be enrolled in a degree or certificate program.
- Male students must be registered with Selective Service.
- Students must be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress.
- Students must not be in default on a federal education loan or owe a payment on a federal grant.
- Students must have a valid social security number.
Please submit the application. Awarding of funds is made on a case-by-case basis. The maximum award amount is $1,000 a student. A limited amount of funds are available.

What is the CARES Act?
The CARES Act is federal legislation that provides a variety of financial support to individuals and businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.One part of this federal program allocates money to UHV, and a portion of that allocation can be awarded to students experiencing financial expenses because of the campus disruption in operations from COVID-19.
What kinds of expenses are allowable?
Expenses need to be directly related to the changes in campus operations because of COVID-19. Here are some examples:
- If a student needs a laptop because UHV moved to online courses, that would be an allowable expense.
- If a student worked on campus and now the job is terminated, funds could be used to pay for expenses because UHV changed operationally.
If you or a family member lost your job and cannot afford to pay for books, that expense would not be allowed because it does not relate to UHV’s change in operations.
Funds can be used for food, housing, course materials, technology, health care or childcare. These expenses need to be tied directly to a specific change in how UHV is operating because of COVID-19.
How much can I apply for?
Students are eligible for a maximum of $1,000 in support. We have a limited amount granted to us, and we appreciate students only asking for the amount needed so we can serve as many students as possible.

Does the money need to be repaid?
No. Money received through this fund does not need to be repaid.
Would this funding reduce my financial aid?
No. This fund does not negate or replace financial aid, and it is a one-time grant.
What are the deadlines to apply?
Applications are taken throughout the semester. There is no deadline to apply. Applications are reviewed as soon as possible. Funds are distributed within one week of application approval.
How will I be notified of the application decision?
If selected or denied for an emergency grant, you will be notified by email.
What if I owe UHV for tuition or other expenses?
If awarded, the full amount of the emergency grant will be disbursed directly to you. It will not, for example, be applied to an outstanding balance with the university.
