Secondary Teacher Certification - Middle and High School
Middle and high schools need teachers who are passionate about their subject areas and able to engage students in the learning process. If you see yourself teaching upper grade levels from 7 to 12, our Secondary Teacher Certification program can give you the credentials you need to get into the classroom and begin making a difference.
Secondary Teacher Certification is the program for you if

Program Requirements
All students in the Secondary Teacher Certification program must complete the following requirements:
- Choose your teaching certification plan and complete all the requirements for your degree. If you are interested in the BBA, you must choose the management plan and obtain a composite business certificate.
- Complete nine semester hours of English, six of which must be in composition (this applies to all Secondary Teaching Certification students).
- Take courses in fundamentals of speech and computer proficiency. Alternatively, you may take and pass a competency test in these two areas and complete courses in laboratory natural science (eight hours for the BA and BS).
- Secure admission to the secondary teacher education program through the School of Education, Health Professions, and Human Development.
- Complete 24 hours of professional development/education courses:
- CUIN 3323 Instructional Design
- INDS 3323 Child Development and Its Application to Learning
- CUIN 3327 Educational Technology
- LITY 4364 Content Area Reading and Study Skills
- FEDU 3321 Educational Foundations for Teaching
- CUIN 4313 Secondary Teaching Strategies
- SEDU 4303, 4304 Secondary Student Teaching
- After completing CUIN 3323, INDS 3323, CUIN 3327, take and pass the PPR qualifying test.
- Take the PPR state exam and Content Area Exam before you begin student teaching.
- Satisfy requirements in a teaching field, consistent with the courses meeting new state standards. Please refer to the UHV Course Catalog for guidelines. Check with faculty advisors for verification.
