CACREP Program Accreditation

Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP)

CACREP accredits over 900 master’s and doctoral degree programs in counseling and its specialties offered by 416 colleges and universities across the United States.

  • The Professional School Counseling program, and previous 48-credit hour Community Counseling program, gained CACREP accreditation in 2010.
  • The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program gained CACREP accreditation in 2016.

CACREP provides leadership and promotes excellence in professional preparation through the accreditation of counseling and related educational programs. As an accrediting body, CACREP is committed to the development of standards and procedures that reflect the needs of a dynamic, diverse, and complex society.

CACREP encourages and promoted the continuing development and improvement of preparation programs; and prepares counseling and related professionals to provide services consistent with the ideal of optimal human development.

UHV Professional Counseling Program Outcomes

During the 2020-2021 academic year the UHV Professional Counseling program had a total of 74 enrolled students at the Victoria campus and University of Houston-Victoria at Katy instructional site. The Professional Counseling Program received 146  new applications for the Summer 2020, Fall 2020, and Spring 2021 semesters. There were 33 Clinical Mental Health Counseling and 2 School Counseling graduates from the UHV Professional Counseling Program.

Our graduates consistently achieved high pass rates on licensing and certification examinations. Our examination pass rate of students graduating from the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program was 78%. Our examination pass rate of students graduating from the Professional School Counseling program was 100%.

The NCE is required for licensure and the TExES 152 is required for school counselor certification in Texas. Students are admitted to the Professional Counseling program as either full-time or part-time. The following percentages detail the average completion rates from each of the program concentrations. The expected graduation time frame is 2-4 years depending on full time or part time graduate student status. Of those enrolled in the program, 85.7% graduated from the CMHC concentration and 100% from the School Counseling concentration within 3 years (on-time) of starting the program.

Each graduate from the Professional Counseling Program completes a survey that details his or her employment within the counseling field. Per self-report from students graduating this past year, 77% of Clinical Mental Health Counseling and 100% of School Counseling students reported finding a position within the counseling field.

Our students are able to successfully find employment in the Houston metro area, Victoria, and throughout Texas. Students report finding employment as LPC-Interns, Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors (LCDCs) and Certified School Counselors (CSCs) in both the Victoria and Houston metro area.

Work settings include area Independent School Districts, state mental health counseling agencies, local clinical mental health agencies and group practices, residential treatment facilities, outpatient mental health centers, adoption agencies, and hospitals.
