Expanding Master’s-Level Experiential Learning in Integrated Behavioral Health Settings

Introduction

The University of Houston Victoria (UHV) Graduate Counselor Education Program project, “Expanding Master’s-Level Experiential Learning in Integrated Behavioral Health Settings.” The purpose of the project is to:

  1. Increase the number of adequately prepared behavioral health providers;
  2. Increase the number of Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) working in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA);
  3. Increase the number of professionals working in Integrated Care settings with at-risk children, adolescents, and transitional age youth;
  4. Increase the number of Licensed Professional Counselors working in the program service area; and
  5. Close the gap in access to behavioral health.

Definition of Integrated Behavioral Healthcare (IBH)

  • It is a coordinated system of care that provides both educational, medical and mental/behavioral health services to address the whole person, not just one aspect of the consumer’s healthcare needs.
  • Agencies collaborate to coordinate needs assessment, services, and follow-up of educational, mental and physical health conditions.
  • Integrated models reflect a holistic approach that is strengths-based and person-centered. It represents an opportunity to improve outcomes and reduce costs.

UHV-IBH stipend program

The University of Houston-Victoria Integrated Behavioral Healthcare stipend program exceeded its target goals* by delivering stipends to:

  • 15 students, year one
  • 18 students, year two
  • 26 students, year three

Guidelines for IBH internship experience

  • 60 credit hour Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) Degree
  • Minimum of two semesters at an approved IBH internship site
  • Work with children, adolescents, and transitional age youth (16-24y/o)
