Health Studies

The Bachelor of Science in health studies can help you assist people in living longer and healthier lives. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a projected faster-than-average growth in the field of health promotion and public health. The number of successful leaders in the community health field is on the rise.

This degree program will provide you with the strength and knowledge to take the next steps in your career and give you the opportunity to work in leadership roles in public health. The curriculum focuses on sociology and economics. It also will introduce you to health informatics, community-based prevention models, global health issues and policy as it pertains to public health. The capstone project will embed you within a public health entity as an intern, giving you workforce experience. When you graduate, you will be able to sit for the health educator exam.

Career options for this degree program are available in community health agencies, hospitals, government agencies, health care-based health promotion, health and safety advisement, worksite health programs, social care and pharmaceutical distributors.

Kinesiology with concentration in Exercise Sports Science

The Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with concentration in Exercise Sports Science program equips students with academic knowledge and practical training needed to work in a variety of fitness settings. This program is recognized by the NSCA Education Recognition Program (ERP).

This degree program will prepare the students to excel in teaching physical education and/or coaching in secondary schools. The major also serves as preparation for future graduate studies in exercise sports science. Our program focuses on the importance of healthy lifestyle and how it should be an integral part of overall education experience.

Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Clinical mental health counseling is a master’s degree program that will train you to work with clientele in hospital settings, school counseling, rehabilitation services and mental health agencies. Many students entering the program have an undergraduate degree in psychology or, at a minimum, have completed prerequisite courses in counseling and psychology. The program will train you to understand and recognize cultural diversity, professional problem solving, scholarly inquiry and ethical practice.

This program also is designed to provide knowledge and skills in the counseling profession that will satisfy the Licensed Professional Counselor requirements in the state of Texas. A benefit of this degree plan is that the Allied Health Pathways to Success initiative will provide you with a mentor to assist in transferring and enrolling in a program that will allow for an easy transition into the master’s in clinical mental health counseling.

When you graduate, you may work with families, individuals and groups, or as a college career counselor, substance abuse counselor or mental health supervisor. These counselors often treat depression, trauma, self-esteem issues and relationship problems. In some cases, a counselor helps the client with job, life or educational concerns.
