The Importance of an Education Technology Program

A review of the job market for instructional technology/coordinators revealed over thousands of education technology jobs available in Texas alone. Many of these jobs require a master’s degree in instructional technology and are in K-12, corporate and medical settings, as well as higher education. The job listings request project management, adult learning principles, and organizational skills as preferred qualifications that are offered in our Education Technology degree plan. Moreover, statistics from the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the top five jobs likely to remain in demand include Educational Technology Specialists in varying fields of employment. The Texas Education Agency reports the need for qualified Educational Technology Specialist, and the US Department of Education Executive Summary indicated that that the key to America’s economic growth is preparing learners for a global society that requires using technology for learning and in the workplace. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook)

The Educational Technology program at the University of Houston-Victoria prepares students for positions and leadership roles as technology specialist, and instructional coordinators/designers in higher education, corporate settings as well as in public and private schools and human services. The 30-hour credit program will be offered totally online. Students do not need to be certified teachers to complete this program. Many of the students in our program have never been in a classroom but are interested to learn more about how to effectively integrate technology in different professions. We also have teachers taking our courses to learn more about uses of technology in their classrooms or to change their careers.

To meet the needs of our students, we offer three-degree plans which combine educational technology classes with specialized electives offered by the Master’s in Business Administration (MBA), Master in Education in Adult and Higher Education, or Master in Education in Curriculum and Instruction (CUIN) programs.
