VOICE Program Requirements

Note: Due to the set course rotation, this program admits students only in the fall semester.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or evaluation of international degree showing the equivalent
  • GPA of 2.50 in last 60 hours of college work or cumulative GPA of 2.50
  • Letter of standing for those who previously participated in an Educator Prep Program (EPP) Student must be in good standing with EPP to be admitted to VOICE
  • TSI complete or accepted to UHV graduate program
  • Pass a criminal history background check
  • Maintenance of 2.75 GPA in VOICE classes throughout enrollment in the program
  • Passing score on TExES Core Subjects/Content exam for relevant certification area.
  • Passing score on Science of Teaching Reading exam (TExES #293) for EC-6 and 4-8 certification.
  • Passing score on PPR (TExES #160) state assessment.

  • LITY 6334 Foundations of Developmental Reading (EC-6 or 4-8 cert); 
  • SPED 6321 Introduction to Special Education (7-12); 
  • ESLN 6314 Teaching English as a Second Language (required for ESL cert) 
  • ESLN 6312 Principles of Second Language Teaching (required for ESL cert)

Additional Certification Requirements:

  • Candidates seeking EC-6 or 4-8 certification must take the Science of Teaching Reading (TExES #293) exam. LITY 6334 course will prepare them to take and pass this test. If candidates are completing an internship, the STR exam must be passed prior to beginning the internship.  
  • Candidates who plan to complete the intern option where they are hired as “teacher of record” in a district that requires all teachers have ESL certification must take these ESLN courses and have ESL certification included on their certification plan in order to take the English as a Second Language Supplemental (TExES #154) prior to being hired under the Probationary or Intern certification.
  • Candidates must pass the state PPR #160 to complete certification requirements.
  • Candidates must pass the TExES Core Subjects/Content Certification exam in their desired area prior to student teaching or starting their internship year.

*** According to Texas Administrative Code 228.35—

  • Student must complete 30 clock hours of field based experience to be completed prior to student teaching or internship. Appropriate activities include substitute teaching, hours spent as a classroom aide or classroom observations. See Educator Preparation Office (EPO) for how to appropriately document these hours.
  • Beginning Sept. 1, 2017 - student must complete 150 clock hours of training prior to student teaching or internship.

With faculty advisor approval, VOICE candidates may use up to 12 hours of VOICE courses (CUIN 6312, 6314, 6320 or choice of ESLN 6314, LITY 6334 or SPED 6321) toward a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction: Elementary Education, Literacy Studies, Elementary Mathematics, Elementary Science Education, Educational Technology, ESL/TESOL, or Early Childhood Education. For information about these degrees, consult with a certification analyst.
