Success Coaching & Advising for students under 45 hours:
How does student success coaching work?
Student Success Coaches visit with students face-to-face, by telephone, or via email. The coaching sessions are not long, and students can call or email at any time to make appointments. Some students opt to visit with a Success Coach once a week, twice a month or twice a semester, while others may want to visit more frequently.
The Success Coach assists students with various strategies to effectively use their time and stay focused on their educational goals. The Coach helps students make good choices and overcome obstacles. In addition, Coaches work with students by providing suggestions on improving relationships with other students and friends.
Coaches are there for students when problems arise with attendance and as they work to develop time-management techniques. They also provide assistance with general information, and act as a mentor and confidant. A Success Coach motivates and inspires students to reach out and accomplish goals that they never thought were possible. They also connect students with Career Services staff who help them make good choices in their career paths and achieve their dreams.
Success Coach Visits
Students visit with a Success Coach when it is convenient for them. Students at UHV can stop by Room 133 of University West at any time between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to make an appointment to speak (in person or by phone) to a Coach about academic courses, advising, degree progression, time management, tutoring sessions, short-term and long-term goals, etc. Call (361)570-4288 or email StudentSuccessAdvisor@uhv.edu to schedule an appointment.

What is Student Success Coaching?
Student Success Coaching is a rewarding process that assists college students with short- and long- term goal setting and gives students the tools to make those goals become a reality. Success Coaches help students overcome fears of not being able to succeed in college. In addition, Coaches work with freshmen and sophomore students to motivate them to make sound decisions in order to accomplish their educational goals in a timely manner.
Academic advising is an educational process that, by intention and design, facilitates students’ understanding of the meaning and purpose of higher education and fosters their intellectual and personal development toward academic success and lifelong learning (NACADA, 2004).
At University of Houston-Victoria (UHV), academic advising provides students with the opportunity to build a relationship with their advisor for the purpose of gaining assistance in planning their educational career, in learning the skills needed for academic success, and in learning how to access the variety of resources and services available to them at University of Houston-Victoria.
Academic advising is a collaborative educational process whereby students and their advisors are partners in meeting the essential learning outcomes, ensuring student academic success, and outlining the steps for achievement of the student's personal, academic, and career goals. The advisor/student partnership requires participation and involvement of both the advisor and the student as it is built over the student’s entire educational experience at the university. Both the student and the advisor have clear responsibilities for ensuring the advising partnership is successful.

This model aids in retention and allows Success Coaches to be effective, highly involved, and proactive in their approach with students and their academic careers. The model is based on a set of student learning outcomes so that academic advising and success coaching creates an environment for students' educational experiences within their ambitions, skills, and lifespans to extend learning beyond campus and one’s collegiate career.
