University of Houston-Victoria

Campus Update from President Glenn

Dear Faculty and Staff,

As the University of Houston-Victoria prepares to begin the spring semester, we wanted to take some time to share the steps the university is taking to help everyone stay safe during the recent spike in COVID cases. We are excited to see you all return for another great semester, but we always want to keep your safety at the top of our priorities. Here are some measures the university plans to implement:

  • Consistent with other institutions of higher learning around the state, UHV will have a soft opening of classes for the first two weeks of the Spring 2022 semester. Classes will begin on Jan. 18, as originally planned. While we will still offer face-to-face courses, all face-to-face courses will also offer real-time streaming so students who are uncomfortable or unable to attend face-to-face have options to continue their studies uninterrupted. Course modes will remain as listed in the class schedule. However, those faculty members who will offer streaming should provide a notification to students through Blackboard.
  • UHV plans to return to its original operation plans by Feb. 7, but the university’s leadership will continue to monitor the situation before making a final decision.
  • Faculty members who wish to offer only real-time streaming classes should contact their dean for approval. Faculty members also should check with IT to ensure they will be teaching in rooms that can accommodate real-time streaming in conjunction with face-to-face instruction. Faculty members should communicate any changes in class mode to all of their students. Once the soft opening period is done, faculty members should communicate to their students that classes will return to their original mode.
  • The Executive Committee will continue to monitor the situation – along with recommendations provided by the UHV COVID-19 Task Force – and make decisions regarding any changes to the university’s safety measures during the spring semester.
  • Faculty and staff members should consult their deans or directors for accommodations for not working on campus due to circumstances that are impacted by COVID either directly or indirectly. We intend to provide flexibility with consideration for the safety of our faculty, staff and students.
  • UHV is extending its ban on international travel. Domestic travel may continue, but it must be approved by the appropriate vice president.
  • We will follow current CDC guidelines regarding isolation and quarantining in the case of a positive test or if you are experiencing COVID symptoms.
  • The UHV COVID operations center should be notified regarding a positive test or if an individual is experiencing COVID symptoms by filling out the appropriate forms on the website
  • While we cannot mandate, we strongly encourage vaccinations and boosters, social distancing and wearing appropriate masks in public spaces, and regular testing

As we move into this new semester, we hope everyone will continue to work together to make UHV a safe and welcoming place for everyone. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the UHV COVID-19 Operations Center at covidops@uhv.edu. As always, you may also feel free to contact me directly.
