Helping Our Community from UHV President Bob Glenn

Dear UHV Family,

During the past several weeks, you have amazed me with your generosity toward our students and your efforts to help each other during this uniquely difficult time. Now, as Texas begins to move toward reopening businesses, UHV wants to continue supporting our neighbors by donating to area nonprofits. I sent an email to you on Thursday asking that you consider helping jaX, our live jaguar mascot at the Texas Zoo. I hope you won’t think of me as pushing my luck, but I wanted to share some additional ways you can assist Victoria nonprofits that help those most in need.

Christ’s Kitchen currently is serving about 630 to 650 people every six days a week. Although the organization is getting plenty of food donations, it needs backpacks and tote bags to help the people it serves take food home. These do not need to be new, but they should be in good condition. The organization also is looking for small bottles of hand sanitizer and $5 H-E-B gift cards to buy gas for those in need. If you have items to donate, please drop them off from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday at Christ’s Kitchen, 611 E. Warren Ave. If you prefer to donate money, you can bring a check or cash to Christ’s Kitchen or mail it to:

Christ’s Kitchen
P.O. Box 3391
Victoria, TX 77903

The Food Bank of the Golden Crescent also has been distributing thousands of pounds of food every day. On May 22, the food bank plans to have a major distribution event. If you want to help replenish the food bank, you can donate food or money. Each dollar donated can feed up to eight individuals. You can donate online at www.tfbgc.org.

If you want to donate food, the food bank is asking individuals to bring peanut butter because it is a good source of protein and lasts a long time. Donations of money or food can be dropped off at the food bank’s front office at 3809 E. Rio Grande St. It is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Monetary donations also can be mailed to:

P.O. Box 5085
Victoria, TX 77903-5085

Again, thank you all for your generosity and patience during this difficult time. UHV is part of a wonderful community, and we want to support our neighbors as they have supported us. Together, we can make it through this situation and move toward a better future.

Bob Glenn
