University of Houston-Victoria

Spring 2020 for Students from UHV President Bob Glenn

Dear Students,

I wanted to take just a brief moment to address some of the feelings I know many of you are having. I know that the decision to go to online classes was one that many of you are rightfully annoyed/upset/distraught/distressed/disappointed (you pick the best adjective to describe your feelings) about. I also know that in spite of the feelings you are experiencing, you also recognized that the situation we are in dictated the right course of action. I want you to know that all the decisions we have made, and will continue to make, are focused on the health and well-being of our entire UHV community. Nonetheless, I regret that this is how your semester ended up, and I wanted to apologize for the abruptness of the transition.

For those of you who are seniors, I also recognize that part of your distress was that this semester was supposed to be a time for you to say goodbye to your friends, your faculty and to celebrate your achievement with your family. I am determined that this pandemic will not rob you of the chance to say goodbye and to celebrate. We have not canceled commencement. It is simply postponed until it is safe to have large gatherings. You will not be denied the chance to walk across the stage. Be patient with us; we are going to get your there.

The good news for those of you who are not seniors yet is that we are going to keep you on track toward your commencement. There will be an end to this situation. It is the nature of a virus pandemic for there to be a time when the new virus spreads, followed by a receding of the spread, and then the discovery and application of preventive medicines and procedures. We must each do our part now to flatten the curve and reduce the spread of the virus. That is why we have moved to online classes. But, if your preference is face-to-face instruction, then please take comfort in the knowledge that normalcy is around the corner in the not-too-distant future.

Students are the reason for the existence of our university. Your faculty and staff have gone above and beyond to change gears, adapt and adjust so that you can stay on track to reach the future you see for yourself. If you are experiencing difficulties, there are people here who will help you overcome them. Be assertive and tell us what you need. Your faculty members are more than willing to work with you. If you need help, ask. We are only successful as a university if you are successful in your academic goals. Be patient with us, and we will be patient with you. Work with us, and we will work with you. Together, as JAX NATION, we will get through this.
