A Message to the UHV Community Regarding Reopening from UHV Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Chance Glenn

Dear UHV Faculty and Staff,

It’s been more than two months since many of you have been on campus, and I am so proud of how our UHV community came together to transition classes to online and continue to serve current and prospective students. Just as Texas has started to reopen, it’s also time for UHV to begin reopening slowly and safely.

As you have seen from the draft UHV Reopening Plan that was shared last week, there are five phases of reopening for UHV. This plan was developed by the UHV Reopening Task Force and vetted by the Executive Committee.

We currently are in Phase 1 of the reopening plan and will enter Phase 2 on Monday, June 15, at both the main UHV campus and the UHV Katy instructional site. In Phase 2 of the plan, 15 percent of staff will return, and both UHV and UHV Katy will continue to be closed to the public. Classes will continue to be offered online only throughout the summer. You can read more about Phase 2 and review the full plan on the UHV coronavirus website.

In order to be in any buildings on the Victoria campus or UHV Katy starting on Monday, personnel need to:

  • Take the online test
  • Have their supervisor’s approval
  • Self-assess their health each day
  • Wear a mask in public spaces when away from designated work area
  • Social distance their workspaces
  • Practice social distancing when encountering other employees

UHV Katy will remain locked, so if you will be returning to work there, please inform the Safety and Security team at katysecurity@uh.edu.

The health and safety of our students, faculty and staff have guided our decisions, and we have or soon will be implementing the following:

  • Hand sanitizer available for all active areas of campus
  • Partitions erected where possible in meeting spaces where social distancing is difficult
  • Office and active classroom spaces cleaned regularly
  • Signage installed to remind people about the active phase and to protect each other by wearing masks and practicing social distancing

Phase 3 will start Monday, Aug. 3, when about 30 percent of staff will come back to the Victoria campus and UHV Katy. Both locations are expected to be in Phase 4 by Monday, Aug. 24, the start of the fall semester, when about 70 percent of faculty and staff will return.

Fall semester classes will be offered both in-person and online with classrooms limited to 50 percent occupancy to maintain social distancing. In order to protect the campus community, students will wear masks, and faculty will wear face shields provided by the university. Lectures will be streamed in real time and uploaded for students who aren’t in the classroom. We may end the fall semester with all-online classes after Thanksgiving break if conditions warrant the switch.

There still are many unknowns with COVID-19, so please keep in mind that our reopening plan may need to change with the conditions. I appreciate your patience as we navigate this uncharted territory.

Please have a discussion with your supervisor about Phase 2 before Monday. If you have questions that your supervisor cannot answer, please contact me at provost@uhv.edu.
