Spirit Cords

Male Student with Cords

Spirit cords are long, thin, colored ropes with tassels on each end that are worn around the neck during commencement ceremonies. These cords recognize graduates with academic honors or who have participated in certain groups or clubs, in colors determined by each school or club.

Honor Cord

If you are graduating with honors, you will receive an Honor Cord.

Patriot Cord

If you are a Veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, we would like to honor you by providing you with a red, white, and blue Patriot Cord to wear at no cost.

First-generation Cord

First-generation college students are defined as “any student whose parents, or guardians, did not complete a four-year college or university degree”.

Jaguar Class Ring

An initiative that was three years in the making, UHV unveiled its official class ring during its 2017 Homecoming. Led by SGA, the class ring was designed by students working in conjunction with staff and administrators. For more information on the Jaguar ring and how to purchase one, please visit Student Life's Traditions page During the spring semester, a ceremony is held for students who have earned their class ring. The ring is a source of pride and accomplishment, and an identifier of UHV alumni.

How do I wear my cap & gown?

How can such a simple outfit be so complicated? It doesn’t have to be!
Here are a few tips to help you look your best as you walk across the stage in your cap and gown.

Bachelors Cap & Gown

Undergraduate/Bachelors Regalia

1. Adjust the gown so that it sits comfortably on your shoulders and zip up your gown. It should fall below your knee, but not so low that it is a tripping hazard.

2. Drape any stoles or cords over your shoulders and adjust the item to hang evenly on both sides.

3. Place the cap on your head so the point is lined up with the middle of your forehead.
(The inside of the cap tells you which end is the front.)
You may need to use some bobby pins or clips to keep it securely on your head.

4. Fasten your tassel to the button on the top of the mortarboard. Put the tassel on the right side.

Graduate/Masters Regalia

4. Fasten your tassel to the button on the top of the mortarboard. Put the tassel on the left side!

5. Drape the folded master hood over your left arm. The velvet strip should be facing outward at the front of your arm.

6. Your master's hood should stay with you all the way up until you are called onto the stage.

7. Once on stage, face away from the Dean. The Dean will lift the hood over your head and place it on your shoulders, adjusting it so it flows smoothly down your back.
