Alternative Office Suite

OpenOffice Application (free)

OpenOffice is an open-source (free), multi-platform office productivity suite. It includes key desktop applications, such as a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager and drawing program. It has a user interface and feature set similar to other office office suites. OpenOffice also works transparently with a variety of file formats, including those for Microsoft Office, enabling you to save files as Microsoft Word .doc, PowerPoint .ppt, or Excel .xls formats. This makes it very easy to exchange files with a Microsoft Office user.

Our campus is standardized on Microsoft Office, so your instructor will request that you submit files in a Word-compatible format. You simply create your document in OpenOffice and then go to File | Save as and change the File Type to Microsoft Word .doc. This file will now be viewable by anyone with Microsoft Word.
