Volunteering at Relay for Life

The weekend was decent as my UHV soccer teammates and I participated in the Victoria County Relay for Life. We talked about running in the event, but we didn’t have enough time to fundraise.

Almost there!

Easter is a great holiday, especially with family, friends and loved ones. I’m not a big Easter person, but I know some friends who are. You know, the ones that go egg hunting and make Easter egg baskets and things of that nature. For some families it’s a tradition, and they all get together to celebrate it. The families who are believers go to church, and others sleep in. Some families might just go out for a day at the park, maybe a picnic, or even pull out the grill. It’s just a nice time to spend with family, especially those students who are very family oriented.

Sparks of summer

With the school year almost over, I wonder what students are planning for the summer. If I were to take a guess, a lot of them are planning a vacation of some sort. Some, actually most, will need to take summer school. It will be those students who need extra hours because of their semesters not going well or those who want to get ahead a little.

No power and a fire alarm

It’s been awhile since the power has gone out. But Sunday night (well, technically Monday around 12:30 a.m.) the transformer blew next to Jaguar Hall, and we were out of power. We were out of power for about two hours. I know a lot of people are used to always having power here, but where I’m from, I’m used to not having power. So I actually like it because it’s been a while.

Carnival time at UHV

The carnival was in town this past weekend. It was good to have an event to attend; otherwise it would have just been another regular weekend.

Texas A&M-Victoria

Legislation has been introduced to move UHV from the University of Houston System to the Texas A&M System. From what I’ve discussed with staff members and students, it seems like we could be called Texas A&M-Victoria in the fall.

Reflecting on the weekend

With all the hype of Spring Break and all the talk, it’s over. I wish it really wasn’t, but unfortunately it’s time to come back to reality.

Student runs in ALS Stroll Roll ’N’ Run

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a serious and progressive disease. This disease attacks the nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. The muscles in the body stop working, and the disease leads to death.

South Padre is place to be for Spring Break

One of the most exciting holidays of the year for high school and college kids is almost here. With Spring Break approaching, plans already are being made. Trips are being planned, and hotels, condominiums and beach houses are being booked.

Friendship

Just sitting here reflecting on the past
Thinking of the memories and how long they might last
Asking myself why people come and go
Is like asking why the sun shines and why the moon glows
Never thought things would turn out the way they did
Tried to disagree on what others said it would be
Always thinking and searching for an answer
But I know it’ll be hard like finding a cure for cancer
Being hopeful sometimes but don’t know if I should
Sometimes I feel like no one else thinks the way I do
Staring into the eyes of others now
And thinking if this journey is going to last
Starting to ask myself what’s the point
Should these relationships be a must
Will I find the answers to what is lost
Or should I forget about you because I know the cost
Maybe I just didn’t want to accept the fact
Of how things can happen like that
How quickly we go our separate ways
To not hearing from one another the next day
I guess all that time helped us become our own person
Lead us through struggles and thought us life lessons
We are who we are now because of our past
We should all enjoy every breath we take because it may be our last
I am still hopeful to find and answer
Hopeful

Faint Scent

There is a faint scent in the air
It comes in closer as time passes
But it’s disturbed by impressions of despair
It has potential to bring joy and happiness
But it can easily be derailed
By negativity and bitterness

Ultimate Fighting Championship 126 and Super Bowl XLV, two big events during the first February weekend, turned out to be very exciting and interesting.

UFC 126 was on Saturday, and middleweight champion Anderson Silva didn’t disappoint his fans and viewers. His opponent, Brazilian Vitor Belfort, who was thought to be the best threat to Silva’s title striking-wise, came off aggressively to begin the first round. His fighting style might have cost him the fight, as the champion delivered a front kick to the jaw of the challenger, which dropped him straight to the ground in the first round. Silva smelled blood like a shark in the water and went for the kill by delivering strikes to seal the deal. The champion has successfully defended his title 10 times, which is a record in UFC history. With this victory, I wonder who’s next in line to face the unorthodox champion.

Thanks to the R.A.s at Jaguar Hall

Everyone raise your glasses. I would like to thank our guests of honor today: the wonderful men and women who make sure that there’s some fun to be had at UHV’s Jaguar Hall, even though there isn’t much to do in this town.

Semester starts with chilly week

It has been a cold week in Victoria. The weather warms up a bit at noon, but you can still feel the cold wind. In the evening, the wind makes the weather a lot colder than it should be, but in the morning, the wind power is reduced, and it’s just cold. It’s a beautiful, cold day.

Come Winter

It is Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, 4:26 pm. It is nice and cold out. I am at home, sitting on my bed after an early training session listening to Drake, "Come Winter". Facing my window, with a slight shade of light from outside, the weather feels still. It's a gloomy afternoon as I reflect on the first semester of college.
