Component III: UHV Connections Online Mentoring Program: Increasing University Transfer Student Graduation Rates Through Mentoring
The UHV Connections Online Mentoring Program will bridge the distance between UHV and CBC, and close gaps in the pipeline from the community college to the university.
UHV Connections will promote the retention of college students in underserved populations, ease their transition from the community college to the university, enhance their college experience, and increase their academic success.
2007-2008 Results
- There were 44 Mentors and Mentees for the Fall 2007, Spring 2008 and Summer 2008. The initial target was 40.
- The number of UHV transfers from CBC in the Fall 2007, Spring 2008 and Summer 2008 was 9. The baseline was exceeded by 350% from a target of 10%.
- Number of CBC graduates in the Fall 2007, Spring, 2008, and Summer 2008 was 4. This was a 300% increase.
Event Highlights
- January 31, 2008 there was a recruitment event held in Beeville so assist CBC in the recruitment of mentees from their campus. Ten mentees were recruited at this time.
- April 24, 2008 the Mid-semester event was held at the Victoria Campus. Seventeen people attended from Beeville, Kingsville, and Victoria campuses. A UHV tour and luncheon was provided for the visiting students.
- May 1, 2008, an E-Mentoring Recognition Ceremony was held at the Beeville campus. Twenty mentors and mentees were present at this event. The Keynote presentation was done by Michell Duran, who is working very hard to get her Ph.D.
Trainings
- February 13, 2008, a training session was held in Victoria for those new mentors participating in the spring semester.
- February 15, 2008 an extra training session was held at the UHV campus at which time 4 persons attended.
- February 29, 2008, another training session was held in Beeville and at this time, six were present.
- August 27, 2008 ten new mentors were trained in Victoria for UHV-Connections.
- September 3, 2008, there was also a training session held in Victoria at which time seven mentors attended.
- September 12, 2008 a mentor training session was held at the CBC campus in Beeville, TX for those mentors who live in the Beeville area. Ten were present at this event.
