Component II: Fall Academy (Certificate II)

The Fall Academy expands on the techniques presented in the Summer Academy by focusing on specific ways to develop content for an online course. In addition to tips on how to maximize the effectiveness of PowerPoint presentations, WebCT, and Adobe Connect, faculty will also learn how to optimize course documents for the web. The academy will consist of 48 hours seat time over 12 weeks combined face-to-face and online.

Learning activities

  • Internet-based Learning Activities
    An overview will be given in this session on blog, wiki, podcasting, OpenCourseWare, WebQuest, and so on. Learning activities design and development with these resources will be discussed.

Course design

  • Course Design and ADA Compliance
    Application of ADA compliance in online course design and development will be discussed in this session.

  • Introduction to ITV Instruction
    As an important tool of delivering distance learning courses, ITV will be introduced in this session. Pedagogy and course design of ITV courses will be discussed as well.

Learning systems

  • WebCT Tools
    An overview and demonstration of WebCT tools for developing and delivering online courses will be given in this session.

  • Adobe Acrobat Connect
    An overview and demonstration of Adobe Acrobat Connect, an virtual meeting system, will be given in this session.

Course content development

  • Copyright and Fair Use for Online Courses
    Copyright and Fair Use issues in developing and delivering online course contents will be discussed in this session.

  • Effective PowerPoint for Online Instruction
    In this session, pedagogy and strategies on improving the effectiveness of PowerPoint slideshows in online courses will be discussed, and a demonstration of adding audio and assessment to PowerPoint slideshows with Adobe Presenter will be given.

  • Graphics for Online Course
    This session will discuss the graphic formats that are compatible with WebCT, visual literacy issues of using graphics in online course, and basic graphic editing with the Paint tool.

  • HTML Creator in WebCT
    This is a hands-on session teaching the faculty members to use HTML Creator in WebCT.
