Subject: Cultural Celebrations
Forwarded to: Director, Community

I have noticed the Black history
Month and Spanish Heritage Month
activities listed on the UHV website and
they are great. When will the university
be holding their celebrations of other
cultures? We do not currently
acknowledge or celebrate any cultural
background other than that of
African-Americans and Hispanics. If we
truly wish to be inclusive, we must
reach out to everyone. We don't have
many black or Hispanic students and the
majority of our student population is
tired of being ignored.
Response: We celebrate Black History
Month and Hispanic Heritage Month as
part of national emphases. These
activities fit with UHV's plan to
recruit underrepresented groups to our
university, so that our university
reflects the diversity of our region. We
also participate in other national
emphases such as Constitution Day. We
are open to your suggestions - in fact,
that is the reason we have The
Suggestion Box. Please let us know what
suggestions you have related to this
issue. Many changes have come about on
our campus because of students' ideas
for improvement. Thank you.

At uhv you walk alot. it would be
nice to have fragrant herbs or plants as
you walk by established landscaping,
sidewalks, "flowerbeds". Things like
rosemary, lemon balm or lemon thyme,
anything that smells good/different when
you brush by it. thanks for your attn.
Response: Thanks for your attention
to our landscaping. We will take your
suggestion into consideration.

Subject: Caterer for Convocation
Forwarded to: Director, Community
Relations
The university should consider using
a different caterer for university
events (other than the one used for the
September 06 Convocation. The food
presented for that event was embarassing
and unappetizing. Also, individuals
might have allergies to nuts and other
food items and this should be taken into
consideration when selecting a caterer.
While we had to listen to all the
"great" things about being associated
with UHV, this was defintely not one of
them.
Response: At events such as
convocation, we choose the caterer who
will best meet our budget and menu
requirements. Menus are carefully
selected to include options that satisfy
the palates and dietary or religious
restrictions of nearly 200 guests. As it
is not possible to meet the individuals
preferences and needs of every guest, a
variety of food options are available
from which employees may choose. At this
particular event, numerous compliments
along with requests for recipes have
been received.
For those with nut or food allergies,
we will label these food choices in the
future so they are more identifiable.
However, any invited guest - especially
those with a medical need for a
restricted diet - is welcome to contact
our office in advance and inquire as to
the menu so they can manage their diet
accordingly.
Your suggestions for improvement are
certainly always welcome and we have
taken them seriously. If you have any
specific concerns, please contact the
community relations office at 570-4349.

Subject: WebCT
Forwarded to: Provost
Hello.I'm A UHV student who is about
to graduate in December and I had a
comment about my classes. I'm am taking
the last nine hours of my college career
and in my whole college experience have
never taken an online class. It is not
me, I prefer to be in face to face
classes. I realize that Web CT and
online classes help a great deal of
people. Having said that I would also
like to say, without sounding too
selfish, what about the people who can't
stand online classes. Like I mentioned
before, these are my last nine hours at
UHV and I have spent more time on the
annoying Web CT for these three classes
than I ever have before. My point is
that if I sign up for a face to face
course, I would love for it to be just
that, no online stuff AT ALL! Also
sometimes I can't get any of my work
done because Web CT has one problem or
another. I don't understand why I have
to go online to get reading assignments
or post web discussions if I did not
sign up for an online class. I guess
that is all I have to say. Again, I know
the whole online thing is helpful to
some. But what about those of us who
didn't sign up for it and are being
forced to deal with it.So my suggestion
is if they say it is a face to face
class why not keep it that way. Thanks
Response: Thank you for expressing
your concerns about taking three online
courses your last semester at UHV. We
understand that students have different
learning styles and preferred formats
for classes. At UHV we make an effort to
meet the needs of working, adult
students and graduating students.
Apparently in your degree program it was
necessary to offer the final capstone
courses online for the majority of
students. I regret that we couldn't
offer the courses online and
face-to-face due to limited resources.
Congratulations and best wishes after
graduation!
