Subject: Online Courses
Forwarded to: Provost
I have taken many online courses at UHV. Some are very
good and others are a joke. Some of these courses have very
little content, the instructor is never on the discussion
board and we are lucky if the instructor even responds to
emails. I heard from one of my friends that she took an
online course that could be completed in 3 weeks. We pay for
an education and should be able to expect some kind of
quality in all online courses. I love this mode of courses
but don't like the lack of faculty presence in some of my
courses. We end up teaching ourselves. Some of the courses I
have had with adjuncts are better than those taught by
full-time faculty.
Response: Thank you for expressing your concern about
online courses at UHV. I consulted with the Deans about your
email and they have assured me that they have established
policies for developing, evaluating and improving all School
courses offerings. During this academic year, course and
academic assessment procedures will be developed in order to
insure curricular and instruction quality and relevance.

Subject: School of Business Web page
Forwarded to: Dean, School of Business
Why doesn't the School of Business use university
resources already created? Their website recreates
everything that is already located elsewhere on the web and
doesn't always provide all the resources that are avaiable
in another department's site. Also, once you get to the SoBA
site, good luck getting back to the UHV website. You have to
first find the very tiny link that says UHV Home. It's
almost like they don't want you going to the UHV website. I
trust deparmental webpages that belong to the departments
that are responsible for the material far more than a
department that is trying to recreate someone else's stuff.
What a huge waste of resources and time!!
Response: Your question is timely, since the School of
Business Administration is currently in the last stages of
implementing a new web design.
The School of Business Administration webpage is designed
primarily to market programs to prospective business
students, and to communicate with current business students.
Our intent is for current and future business students to
find all the information they need in the shortest amount of
time, and this has dictated the structure of our website. In
reviewing our current website, I’m not sure what resources
you believe we have recreated. Sections such as Registration
Information, Online Student Information, and Career
Opportunities all feature links to centralized university
resources pages. In some areas, such as Future Students,
Current Students, and Admission Information, we have
summarized information available in other parts of UHV’s
website, but we are still linking out to the appropriate
departmental pages. To my knowledge, the only place in our
site which has historically not included sufficient
reference to university resources is Financial Aid
Information, a shortcoming which will be addressed in the
new design. The remaining information on our site is
specific to the School of Business Administration.
Your point about the size of the UHV homepage link is
well taken. Ordinarily, visitors should be able to click on
the UHV logo to return to the homepage. It is a weakness of
our current design that this has not been possible. However,
this has already been corrected in the new design. I hope
when it’s published you’ll take a look around and let us
know what you think.

When is our website going to be consistent? Most of the
departmental pages are consistent with the design and colors
of UHV. However, when you go to the academic schools, you
don't even feel like you are still at UHV. Colors don't
match university colors, layout changes, creating a huge
disconnect. It's like going to three separate institutions.
Since the web is such a huge marketing tool, I'm surprised
the university allows the schools' pages to be so different
from the overall university web design. Also, I hate having
to try to find something on the school's sites. Navigation
is different and I have to spend a huge amount of time just
searching. I don't have to do that on the other departmental
pages since they all follow a similar structure.
Response: Thank you for this observation. You make
excellent points. I am copying the Deans so they will be
aware of your recommendation for website changes.

Subject: Employee Assistance Program
Forwarded to: Human Resources Director
If this institution really cared about its employees as
the email on the employee assistance program claims, then
the emphasis wouldn't have been on the institution (how many
times do you have to mention and bold UHV?)and we would be
addressing workload issues for faculty and staff. Notice the
lack of any open discussions on campus about workload?
However, talk honestly with any faculty and staff member and
all you will hear about is workload issues. Show us that you
really care--address workload!!!
Response: I would recommend that you speak to your
immediate supervisor concerning workload issues.
