Subject: Online Courses
Forwarded to: Provost
Suggestion: Regarding the response to the previous
month's suggestion of NO ONLINE COURSES, the Provost
recommended we talk to the faculty or the dean. We have
talked with faculty and the dean and just hear excuses.
Nothing ever changes. Please create a mechanism for students
to put forward valid concerns where those concerns will be
taken seriously. Going through the dean doesn't always work.
Some deans just dismiss student concerns and never even
investigate them.
Response: The University of Houston-Victoria faculty and
administration are very interested in quality instruction
and student feedback. When students need to write their
concerns about on-line courses, they need to provide
specific examples and when possible, suggest solutions. It
is difficult to respond to anonymous and general complaints.
Students should first communicate their concerns with their
instructors, next the faculty and finally the Provost and
Vice President for Academic Affairs. If students fear
retaliation or feel a need for anonymity, they can also work
through the student senate who can communicate their
concerns.

Subject: Test Prep Courses
Forwarded to: Manager of the Academic Center
Want to see prep course for professional engineering
exam. With the number of chemical plants in the area, this
would be a good addition to your program.
Response: The Academic Center is currently doing research
to determine if test prep courses would be cost effective
for us, and the engineering exam is one we are considering.
Watch our website for information.

Subject: Employee Resignations
Forwarded to: Director of Human Resources
Is it just me, or are there a significant amount of
resignations in the last month? What is the plan for
retention? or is this normal?
Response: Given the growth mode that the university is
experiencing it is difficult to determine if the number of
resignations is unusually high. Several of the resignations
have involved employees who have physically moved out of
Victoria. We also lose employees after they earn their
degrees and move on to another career opportunity outside
the university. We are very fortunate that the university
offers a tuition exchange program with Victoria College and
provides employee scholarships and college release time to
attend classes. A turnover analysis is conducted every other
year to determine if excessive turnover exists within a
particular group of employees. Our next analysis is
scheduled for this year as part of the compensation review.
Please note that we currently have 444 employees on the
university payroll.

Subject: University Colors
Forwarded to: Director of Communications
Why are our colors purple and gold instead of red and
white?
Response: A decision was made in years past by University
of Houston System that each accredited, degree-granting
institution that it oversees would have its own separate
identity. Campuses were given this freedom of individuality
and allowed to conduct their own independent studies as to
the best representation of colors and emblems for their
respective campuses. For UHV, the colors of purple, gold,
and red were selected. The purple symbolizes the purple in
the skies of Texas and the regal quality of education. Gold
represents the flame of knowledge at UHV and the color red,
used as an accent color, keeps consistency with UHV’s past.
Black and white which are “non-colors” are also used as
accents. Additionally, UHV selected the “Lamp of Knowledge”
emblem as part of its current logo. The “Lamp of Knowledge”
represents a flame of eternal thought. Because thinking and
learning are active, the logo symbolizes a positive, eternal
flame of knowledge.
Thank you for your interest.
