Subject: Strategic Planning Training
Forwarded to: Provost
I've been reviewing all the unit plans to prepare for
budget hearings. It is very obvious that unit managers need
training in how to write goals, objectives, performance
indicators, etc. We are all over the map in what we do.
Please provide appropriate training on strategic planning
and assessment. We could all benefit.
Response: Thank you for the suggestion. We'll consider an
early training session next year. If you have any questions
or need assistance with your unit plan now, please contact
the Institutional Research office. Thanks.

Subject: Summer Session Class Schedule
Forwarded to: Registrar
Suggestion: 965 I am enrolled in the MSEDE program and
have to schedule work assignments 6-8 months in advance. It
would be helpful to me (and others I'm sure) if the dates
for Summer Session '07 and Fall Session '07 were posted on
the on-line calendar soon. I've been checking for a couple
months and they are still not listed. Thanks!
Suggestion: 966 Display classes for next semester in a
more timely manner. Even if they need to be revised on a
certain date, there could be a tentative list for students
to use for planning.
Response for Suggestions 965 & 966:
Thank you for
your suggestions. We are currently working on updating the
online calendar for both the summer and fall dates. However,
the summer dates can currently be found within the
Catalog (http://www.uhv.edu/catalog/Academic_Calendar.asp).
The specific course information for the summer will be
available online on
April 2nd, and June 1st for the fall.

Subject: Summer Graduation Applications
Forwarded to: Registrar
I am a biology major and know of several other student
that have to complete classes that where not offered until
this summer before we can graduate. I have found information
about summer 2007 graduation applications and the deadline
but no information about a commencement ceremony. Many of us
are already upset that we will be unable to graduate as
planned after the spring, because of classes not being
offered until the summer, but are we got going to be given
the chance to walk until December? And if that is the case,
is there just going to be a ceremony in Sugar Land?
Response:
Thank you for
your suggestion. Since UHV does not hold formal commencement
ceremonies in the summer, summer graduates can participate
in the Fall ceremony. The Fall ceremony will take place in
December at the Merrell Center in Katy. Congratulations on
your impending summer graduation.

Subject: Change Machine
Forwarded to: Student Activities Manager
Please install a change machine somewhere in the
University West Building. It is very frustrating to have a
$5, $10 or $20 bill and not be able to buy a Coke!
Response: Thank you for your suggestion. We will look
into the possibility of purchasing a change machine.

Subject: Computer Lab - Student Files
Forwarded to: Academic Computing Services Manager
There needs to be something done about student computer
lab availability. While there seem to be plenty of computers
available for students to use, the problem occurs when
trying to access saved files. It seems that in at least the
computer lab where minor talking is allowed the files saved
by students are saved only on the individual computer they
are working on currently, and are only accessible from that
single computer. Something needs to be done to where a
student can access his or her files at any computer set
aside for student use. It creates a huge problem while
trying to work on a large project and having to wait for
someone to move to a different computer so that you can get
your own files. Also the problem escalates when a student
uses whatever computer is available and has files saved on
various computers.
Response: While we make every effort possible for our
computer labs to be user friendly, we do not make any
guarantees that saved files will be on the computers when
students return and/or that the same computer will be
available. Common practice at most universities is for all
public use computers such as computer labs to be reset/wiped
every time the computer is turned off. For all intensive
purposes this means that all of the computers are
reset/wiped every day thus allowing for files not to be
saved at all in any manner. UHV however has decided to allow
files to be saved, but does not make any guarantee to their
availability for future use.
The easiest and most common solution is for students to
use a pen drive to keep all of the files on. This allows for
them to securely save their work as well as be able to
access it whenever and wherever needed. All of our computers
are equipped with USB slots and work well with pen drives
which can be purchased for $10, sometimes less, at most of
your major stores.
