As I was reading the Flame, I found too many grammatical errors. A few I noticed were:

Pompa works fulltime for the City of Victoria and said he first starting taking - It should read as "started taking" classes.

Pompa said he prefers online classes partly in due to - one preposition followed by a prepositional phrase is the worst kind of grammatical error.

A group of students enrolled in Jim Holm’s publication relation course - Is it publication relation course or Public Relations course? Never heard of publication relations course.

I thought only a few professors cannot speak English, as well as, many students. Now, UHV is publicizing its English illiteracy in the worst possible manner to attract students…

The Flame welcomes any comments, suggestions or complaints about our publication. Thank you for bringing these errors to our attention. As editor-in-chief of The Flame it is my responsibility to ensure that the articles published are accurate and error-free. The article in question was edited by me and I agree that the errors published are unacceptable. With that said, I take full responsibility for the errors, so if there is anyone who should be publicized as the resident "illiterate" then I will take the title.

The managing editors and writers for The Flame are a talented and intelligent group of students dedicated to publishing news related to the UHV campus. These students are taught by the proficient and knowledgeable faculty at UHV. By no means is it my intent to let my errors represent the intellectual capacity of the campus as a whole.

Oscar Wilde said, "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes." My time at The Flame has not been without mistakes, and I can only hope that these experiences (i.e., mistakes) will only make for a better publication in the future.

Subject — Tuition Telephone Calls

When making the reminder phone call for the tuition deadline, do not make it on the deadline day because the message may not be heard until later in the day after the student returns home.

We try to make calls as soon as we can but there isn't a large window of time and unfortunately, we usually have about 1000 courtesy calls to make in 3 days. As you may know, we also send out a reminder email to every student's UHV email account on the Tuesday before the Friday deadline. We encourage students to check their UHV email account regularly for important information.

Subject — Beautification Award

I think it is great the UHV won the Beautification Award. However, in both the newswire article and the picture in the paper, no credit or mention was made of the individual responsible for all the work. He deserves and should receive appropriate credit!

Response

UHV was very appreciative and honored to receive this beautification award. The hard work of the Facilities department is evident in our buildings and grounds. No one person can take credit for the condition of our buildings and grounds, it is a team effort. However, to address your question, the grounds personnel were not in the photograph because they had other commitments. The grounds personnel were not identified in the caption because it is customary to only identify the persons in the photograph. Thank you for the interest in the Facilities activities and accomplishments.

When will the departmental listing for the faculty and staff directory be updated. I tried to contact someone last week and was told they were not in that department, yet on the listing they were. I also found people on the listing who are no longer here. Please update--this listing can be quite helpful but only if up-to-date.

Subject — Website Design

Could the pages on this website be designed so that when a page is printed, all of the information on the right hand side of the screen is printed?

It happens consistently. Most recently, I printed the page showing the Spring 2 Intrasession. As usual, a few of the letters on every line of the right margin do not print. It's not earth-shattering, but it is annoying.
