Subject: Psychology
Online Courses
I am taking
several online courses in psychology this semester.
I've been told that students can complete one of the
psych professor's online courses in 3 weeks and to
expect little to no interaction with him. If I wanted a
correspondence cours, I would have found one. One of
the reasons I'm at UHV is for the personalized
instruction. Has that gone away now that you are
online? Also, how can the school claim quality courses
if 15 weeks worth of material can be completed in just
3?

Response:
----Quality,
as far as I am concerned, is not directly proportional
to the time one spends working on the product. One can
work for 15 weeks in a class and learn less than one
does in three weeks of intensive engagement with the
material; however, the opposite can also be true. Time
spent completing a course is not necessarily connected
to the quality of the course. However, it could be. As
for interaction online, discussion and interaction vary
from course to course as they vary in f2f classes.
However, in both cases, if you ask an instructor a
question and are not responded to, this is a problem.
Thus, if this is the case in the aforementioned class, I
would like to have the student contact me. Given that
all communication in an online course occurs via written
correspondence--whether in a chatroom or discussion
board--the point that they are similar is valid one (and
a philosophically interesting one). If the student
wants to avoid written correspondence as the primary
vehicle of course communication, I would suggest taking
more f2f courses. Right?

Subject: Graduate
Assistants
The School of Arts and
Sciences- is there a graduate assistantship in place for
students wanting to participate in this program? Is the
current interim dean willing to look at and accomadate
something of this nature to its students.
Forwarded to: Dean,

Response:
--there are
graduate assistantships in A&S and have been for many
years. The
student needs to contact the
department for details.

Subject: Anthropology
Classes
There always seems
to be a lack of Anthropology classes available. In
particular ANT 3311 at the Sugarland/Cinco
Ranch/Online availability. I think it would benefit
many UHV students to have this course at one of the
UHV sites listed above.
