Local fare

It is recommended that you try out the local fare as each county has its own specialty and eating out is the standard. It's actually cheaper to eat out than to prepare something on your own.

Taipei Highlights

The country's booming, vibrant capital is a cosmopolitan city yet nevertheless remains steeped in Chinese, Japanese and native Taiwanese cultures, a compelling combination for visitors. Its most impressive sights include the Grand Hotel which towers one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world, "Taipei 101", topped by the largest Classical Chinese roof in the world; the Taipei 101 Building, at 509 metres currently the tallest in the world; and Lungshan Ssu (Lungshan Temple), the oldest and most famous temple in Taipei.

Chiufen

The nostalgic town of Chiufen is just the first of the attractions along the Northeast Coast, an area with impressive waterfalls, fine beaches, hot springs and peaceful countryside. Today Chiufen is an arts and crafts mountain retreat that began life as a gold-rush boom town. Its chief attractions are its narrow streets, lined with teahouses, souvenir- and snack-stalls.Being popular with artists, it is also a good place to buy high-quality pottery.

Wulai

South of Taipei, the mountainous retreat of Wulai is famous for its Atayal aboriginal performances (tourist-trap, be warned), and for its hot springs. During the chilly winter months, visitors warm up in an outdoor pool of piping hot water and commune with nature. Adventurous bathers pummel themselves under piped streams of hot spring water before taking a plunge into the icy cold water of the river.
